For the past 21 years, the designation has been awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding efforts to support music education and provide music access and education to all students. To qualify, schools must provide detailed information about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction, facilities and support to be reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
Students who partake in music education often benefit from improved memory as well as cognitive, reading, speech, listening and social skills. Additional social benefits include conflict resolution, teamwork skills and how to give and receive constructive criticism, according to the district’s director of fine and performing arts, Izzet Mergen.
