  • Brett Wallace, 48, of East Northport, was driving a 2016 Ram pickup around 11 p.m. Aug. 5 when a police officer saw him pull out of a parking lot on Fort Salonga Road, failing to signal his turn and speeding off east on Fort Salonga Road, police said. The officer caught up to the vehicle on Fort Salonga Road at Turnip Hill after Wallace failed to stay in his lane several times by crossing over the solid white line and operated the vehicle at 60 MPH in a 35 MPH zone, police said. The officer tried to stop Wallace when he made a right onto Catherine Street, police said. Wallace refused to pull over and held his hand out the window as the officer followed Wallace with emergency lights and sirens on, from Catherine Street making a right turn onto Cayuga Avenue and then a right onto Cornell Street, police said. Wallace pulled into a driveway, jumped out of the pickup and tried to walk away from the officer, police said. Wallace's breath smelled of alcohol, his speech was slurred and sluggish, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot and he was unsteady on his feet, police said. The officer attempted to perform field sobriety tests on Wallace, but he refused, police said. Wallace then tried to walk away from the officer and go towards his house, police said. The officer tried to put Wallace in handcuffs, but he resisted by tensing his arms and pulling away, police said. Wallace was eventually cuffed, and while the officer was searching him for contraband, Wallace headbutted the left side of the officer's face, causing pain and redness, police said. Wallace refused to get into the back of the police car and was forcefully placed in the back seat, police said. Wallace was brought to Northport police headquarters where he refused to take a chemical test, police said. Wallace complained of chest pain and was taken to Huntington Hospital by Northport Rescue, where he was cleared for confinement, police said. Wallace was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, second-degree assault: prevent police, resisting arrest, speeding: posted zone, no/expired inspection certificate, unsafe lane change, refuse prescreen test, fail to comply with lawful order of the police, failed to signal a turn, and second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation: based on mandatory suspension.
