Northport PD Blotter: Identity Fraud Cases Reported By Residents

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Feb. 15 through Feb. 21.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

Incidents

• A man reported identity fraud to police on Feb. 15. The man's place of employment received a New York state Unemployment Benefit claim in the mail even though he never applied for one. The man suffered no financial loss at the time, and he hasn't been told of any unauthorized charges or withdrawals. He contacted the Department of Labor to resolve the issue. He also put a hold on his credit and advised the IRS Fraud Department.
• A teenager said he accidentally struck a car with his bicycle at Municipal Lot #2 on Feb. 15. The vehicle's owner only wanted a report made for informational purposes. The teen was warned and admonished by police.
• A man reported identity fraud to police on Feb. 16. The man's place of employment received a New York state Unemployment Benefit claim in the mail even though he never applied for one. The man suffered no financial loss at the time, and he hasn't been told of any unauthorized charges or withdrawals. He contacted the Department of Labor to resolve the issue. • Another man reported identity fraud to police on Feb. 16. He received a New York state Unemployment Benefit claim in the mail even though he never applied for one. The man suffered no financial loss at the time, and he hasn't been told of any unauthorized charges or withdrawals. He contacted the Department of Labor to resolve the issue. He also put a hold on his credit and advised the IRS Fraud Department.
• A man reported identity fraud to police on Feb. 17. He received a New York state Unemployment Benefit claim in the mail even though he never applied for one. The man suffered no financial loss at the time, and he hasn't been told of any unauthorized charges or withdrawals. He contacted the Department of Labor to resolve the issue.
• A man reported identity fraud to police on Feb. 17. A fraudulent unemployment benefits account had been created in his name. The man suffered no financial loss at the time, and he hasn't been told of any unauthorized charges or withdrawals. He was advised to contact the NYS Department of
  Labor to advise them, as well as contacting his banks and credit cards to have his account numbers changed.
• A woman reported that an unemployment benefits account had been fraudulently created in her name. She said she reached out to the NYS Dept of Labor, IRS, and the three major credit bureaus to monitor her accounts and Social Security Number. She was advised to contact her banks and credit card companies to have her account numbers changed. At the time of the report, she did not sustain any monetary loss or unauthorized use of her credit cards.
• An argument over snow removal was reported at Sabia's Car Care on Feb. 19. The caller said an employee of the adjacent business was moving snow in a way that blocked a portion of their driveway. The shoveler said he was moving the snow for better visibility for drivers. Police asked the shoveler to pay more attention in the future to where he was piling the snow.
• A man on Feb. 20 said he received a New York state unemployment insurance application in the mail that he did not request. Police suggested he contact the state, as well as his banks and credit bureaus to make sure no one opened an account under his identity.
• A woman on Feb. 20 reported she received a suspicious package. She ordered an item, but when she received it, she did not recognize the return address and feared that it was a scam. Police told her that if she did not want the item, she could contact the vendor to return or dispose of the item.
