Northport Police Blotter: $10K Fraudulently Charged On Man's Card

Someone changed a man's credit card account information and tried making the hefty charge, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from July 13 through July 19.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Police responded to Oak Street to resolve a neighbor dispute. The complainant said his neighbor no longer wanted him to use his outdoor fire pit. The officer spoke with the neighbor who believed the fire pit was not up to code. The officer did not observe any violations. The complainant wanted the report to be filed for informational purposes. The incident happened July 14.
  • An officer helped a driver jump start his vehicle on Main Street on July 16.
  • Police responded to a Woodbine Avenue home at 10:30 p.m. July 16 for a report of people yelling. When arriving, the officer didn't hear any noise coming from the house. The caller told the officer a white vehicle sped off from the home but didn't get the plate number. After trying to make contact with the homeowners, the officer was able to get into the house. The officer investigated the inside of the home with no issues and nobody home. At 11:30 p.m., the officer returned to the home and spoke with the homeowners, who said their son drives the white car that sped off from the house, but they were not home when he left. The homeowners said they were fine and didn't know where their son might have gone.
  • Police responded to a parking lot on Fort Salonga Road for a report of a crash. It was determined that someone was walking in the parking lot and bumped into someone's car. Both parties agreed to resolve the situation without police assistance. The incident happened July 17.
  • A man fell at Woodbine Avenue and was injured on July 18. He said while crossing from the east side to west, he tripped and fell down in the center of the street on the trolley tracks directly opposite the entrance to Municipal Lot #2. He had cuts to his left arm and right knee but also complained of hip pain. Northport Rescue responded and medically evaluated him, but the man refused any further medical attention. The undersigned didn't observe any defects in the roadway. A copy of this event was forwarded to Northport Village Administrator.
  • A woman stepped in the road at the intersection of Fort Salonga Road and Church Street, sat down and started writing with chalk. An officer, who was on patrol, told the woman to get out of the road and leave the area. She left without further incident, though the officer wasn't able to get her name. The incident happened 9:50 p.m. July 18.
  • Police went to a Bluff Point Road home for a report of loud music being played at 10:53 p.m. July 18. The officer spoke with the homeowner, telling him there were multiple complaints, and that he needed to shut it off. The homeowner agreed to do so.
  • A wallet was dropped at Village Park, and the finder turned it in to police headquarters on July 18. Police tried reaching the owner but were unsuccessful.
  • Loud music was being played at a McKinney Avenue home at 11:34 p.m. July 18. Police didn't hear any music in the area at the time, but they went back to the home at 12:03 a.m. for additional calls about loud music. The officer spoke with a resident who didn't realize the music was so loud and turned it off.
  • Loud music was being played on Fifth Avenue at 12:46 a.m. July 19. The tenant agreed to turn the music down.
  • Police responded to a Norwood Avenue home for a report of a loud party at 2:56 a.m. July 19. The resident agreed to turn the music off.
  • Someone went into police headquarters around 8:30 p.m. July 19 to report identity theft. The man said someone changed the information on his credit card account with Bank of America and a $10,000 charge was made on his account. The charge is being held as fraud by Bank of America, and the man did not incur any monetary loss. The report is being held for informational purposes.
