Northport Police Blotter: 3 Men Charged With DWIs

One of the drunken drivers failed to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from July 26 through Aug. 1.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • John Szymanski, 36, of Northport, was involved in a car crash in the parking lot of 427 Fort Salonga Road around 8:30 p.m. July 30, police said. Szymanski told officers that when he was driving his 2020 Alfa Romeo, he sideswiped a parked vehicle while exiting the lot, police said. Szymanski's breath smelled of alcohol, he was very unsteady on his feet, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot and he performed poorly on several field sobriety tests, police said. He refused a pre-screen breath test before consenting to an Intoxilyzer 9000 breath test once at the precinct, police said. Szymanski was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and aggravated DWI. He was brought to Huntington Hospital by Northport Rescue and issued a field appearance ticket, police said.
  • Donald Sedy, 49, of Greenlawn, was driving a 2012 Jeep on Fort Salonga Road when he crashed into a chain-link fence and got his Jeep stuck in a ditch after crossing over into the
    opposite lane around 10:30 p.m. July 30, police said. Sedy's breath smelled of alcohol, he was very unsteady on his feet, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was slurred and sluggish, and he performed poorly on two field sobriety tests, police said. He was unable to perform a field test due to being highly intoxicated, police said. Sedy was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and aggravated DWI.
  • Michael Melamerson, 62, of Northport, was driving a gray Mercedes around 7:30 p.m. July 31 when police saw him heading westbound on Main Street and fail to yield to pedestrians
    in the crosswalk at Main Street and Bayview Avenue, police said. Melamerson was stopped on Highland Avenue, police said. His breath smelled of alcohol, he was very unsteady on his feet, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was slurred and sluggish, and he performed poorly on one field sobriety test, police said. Melamerson was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, DWI: BAC reading and fail to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Incidents

  • The owner of a vehicle that was taking up two parking spots on Main Street was issued a summons on July 26.
  • An intoxicated man was brought from Giunta's Meat Farm to Huntington Hospital by Northport Rescue on July 27.
  • A car was illegally parked in a daycare pick-up zone at Little Sprouts By The Sea on July 27. The driver was issued a summons.
  • A man says he may have left a small bag containing sentimental jewelry on the side of Fort Salonga Road near Cozy Lane on July 27. The man said he may have misplaced it somewhere else.
  • Eggs were thrown at a car on Hillside Place overnight; the incident was reported July 28.
  • A woman fainted at Cow Harbor Park on July 28. She was brought to Huntington Hospital by Northport Rescue.
  • A group of youths riding bicycles recklessly was warned and admonished by police on Main Street on July 28.
  • A man was reportedly yelling at a woman over a parking spot at Municipal Lot #2 on Woodbine Avenue on July 28. The woman told police the man cursed at her and drove away.
  • A woman fainted at Whales Tale on July 30. She was brought to Huntington Hospital by Northport Rescue.
  • Someone reported a telephone scam to police on July 30. A person the man did not know called him and gave the name "Arthur Dawson," stating he was a DEA agent. The man said that "Dawson" asked about his bank account balances. When the man refused to give his bank information, "Dawson" informed him that he would be receiving a quantity of cocaine that he is to transport. The man hung up the phone.
  • A person overdosed on alcohol on Main Street and was brought to Huntington Hospital by Northport Rescue on July 30.
  • A handicap parking permit was found on Main Street around 9 p.m. July 31. Police placed the permit in the temporary bin.
  • A Main Street resident reported being attacked by a hawk while walking on Main Street just east of Church Street on Aug. 1. The woman said she suffered a small cut to the top of her head and said she'd drive herself to Huntington Hospital. Police left a message for the USDA Wildlife again asking for help.
