Northport Police Blotter: Attempted Phone Scams, Car Stuck In Sand
One of the scammers asked for $13,500 to pay a fake bail, while the other told a man there was a $26K charge on his bank account, cops say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from April 24 through April 30.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.
- A Waterside Avenue man reported a phone scam on April 24. He told police he got a phone call from a person he didn't know claiming to be the state police and that they had the man's son in custody. The caller said the man would have to send them $13,500 for bail. The man called Northport police to report the call. The man did not give any personal information to the caller. Police told the man that it was a scam and in the future to never divulge personal information to anyone requesting money.
- Several cars were parking in the Saint Paul's Thrift Shop lot without passes on April 24. Police told the caller that since the parking spaces were private property owned by the church, they could put notices on the offending vehicles or if needed in extreme cases, hire a private tow company to remove the vehicles. The caller was satisfied.
- An officer saw someone riding a UTV / sideXside on Main Street on April 24. Police have received numerous complaints about the UTV operating on village roads as well as cutting through the Harbour Point Condos. Police told the UTV driver that there is no legal means to register an ATV/UTV for operation on public roads or highways in New York state. The UTV rider was issued a summons and escorted back to his home.
- A Scudder Avenue woman called police to her home at 6 p.m. April 24 through 911. She told police she was very concerned with the state of the world and ongoing war. She said she is worried about all of the people involved with the conflict. Police asked the woman if she was in need of any medical attention, to which she said no.
- Police were called to Scudder Avenue at 7 p.m. April 24, where a woman told officers that she has many issues with political figures and their views on several foreign affairs issues. She was not in need of any medical attention or further police assistance at this time.
- A dog got loose on Highland Avenue on April 25. Someone found the dog and brought it to the Northport Police Department. The owner retrieved their dog.
- Police responded to Ocean Avenue Elementary School on April 25 for a report of a child with a pencil through his hand. Northport Rescue responded, but the boy's parent came to the scene and refused medical attention.
- A Monroe Street man reported an attempted phone scam on April 25. The man told police he was called by a man he didn't know claiming to work for Chase Bank and that there was a pending charge for $26,000 on his account. The caller told the man that in order to reverse the unauthorized charge, the man would have to provide his bank account number. The man hung up and reported the call to police. The man sustained no monetary loss and requested a report be filed for documentation purposes.
- Police helped reunite a dog with its owner after it got loose on Bluff Point Road on April 26.
- A cement truck driver cleaned up debris he left in the road on Stanton Street while making a delivery on April 26.
- A summons was issued to a driver whose vehicle was parked illegally on Scudder Avenue, preventing a woman from getting out of a parking spot on April 26.
- A vehicle got stuck in sand in Steers Beach 10 feet from the parking lot near Eatons Neck Road on April 26. A tow truck freed the vehicle.
- The information booth at Village Park was damaged by the weather, police found on April 27. Someone initially thought the booth was vandalized.
- A dishwasher was on fire on Jay Court on April 27. Northport firefighters determined the dishwasher was having electrical issues.
- A Jehovah Witness was reportedly refusing to leave a Main Street property on April 29. Police told him the property owner wanted him to leave, so he did.
- A village vehicle was disabled in Municipal Parking Lot #2 on Woodbine Avenue on April 29. Police helped the person get to another vehicle.
- A faulty sidewalk repair was reported on Scudder Avenue on April 29. The pavement patching was sinking because of the rain, and the Northport Highway Department was notified.
- Northport police helped Suffolk police with an intoxicated man on Clarke Drive on April 30.
