Northport Police Blotter: Drunken Driver Arrested
ALSO: A dispute broke out at a park after someone displayed an American flag and a Donald Trump flag, offending someone else, police said.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Sept. 7 through Sept. 13.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- Jan Van-Heyningen, 26, of Shirley, was seen by an officer driving southbound on Woodbine Avenue at 12:40 a.m. Sept. 9, police said. The officer stopped Van-Heyningen at Maplewood Drive and Elwood Road and observed that his breath smelled of alcohol, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was slightly slurred, he was very unsteady on his feet and he performed poorly on several field sobriety tests, police said. Van-Heyningen was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, equipment: tinted windows, curfew violation: parks/beaches, and DWI: BAC reading.
Incidents
- A loud party was being thrown at a Waterside Avenue home at 1:50 a.m. Sept. 7. The homeowner agreed to turn the music off when police arrived.
- A large group of youths were on Steers Beach. Northport and Asharoken police dispersed the group. The incident happened Sept. 8.
- A woman fainted at Northport Harbor Deli on Sept. 9. She was awake and breathing when police got there. Northport Rescue brought her to Huntington Hospital.
- Police responded to Lic's Ice Cream for a report of a possible scam on Sept. 10. An unknown person called the shop from a blocked caller ID and convinced a woman to get two $500 gift cards and read the security codes to him. The complainant went as far as purchasing the cards but didn't provide the security code to the unknown caller. Police waited for the owner of Lic's Ice Cream to arrive to explain what happened. No loss of funds occurred, and the report was filed for informational purposes.
- A sick raccoon on Hill Street was euthanized and disposed of by police on Sept. 11.
- Police responded to Village Park for multiple calls of a dispute. The argument was the result of someone displaying an American flag and a Donald Trump flag. Someone was offended, causing a disturbance, according to police. Police remained to keep the peace until the subject left. The incident happened Sept. 11.
- Loud music was reported coming from Napper Tandy's at 11:10 p.m. Sept. 11. An employee told police that the band was done playing for the night.
- Police responded to Napper Tandy's at 9:30 p.m. Sept. 12 for a report of loud music being played by a band outside. An employee said the band would lower the music, and they were finishing up for the night.
- Police responded to Union Place for a report of people fighting in the street. A girl told police that her friends were arguing, but things didn't get physical. She refused to give her friend's name or whereabouts. The incident happened Sept. 12.
- A loud party was being thrown at a Steers Avenue home at 11:50 p.m. Sept. 12. The homeowner agreed to turn the music off after asked to by police.
- An officer patrolling Northport Harbor saw a vessel low in the water. The boat owner was on board attempting to find a leak. M15 assisted with pumps until the vessel was towed for a haul out. The incident happened on Sept. 13.
- There were several CO2 cartridges found on the ground at Hickory Place on Sept. 13. Police removed and disposed of the cartridges.
- A debit card was found and turned in to Northport Village Police Department Headquarters on Sept. 13.
- The Oscar's Barber Shop owner told police there was someone he no longer wanted in his store for any reason. A trespass affidavit was signed on Sept. 13.
