Northport Police Blotter: Drunken Driver Crashes Into Building

The man also crashed into a parking meter before swerving in and out of the lane several times, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from June 8 through June 14.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Liam O'Brien, 22, of East Northport, was driving a blue 2011 Subaru Impreza when he crashed into a parking meter and building on Woodbine Avenue moments past midnight June 9, police said. An officer heading to the scene saw a blue car heading south on Woodbine Avenue which matched the description of O'Brien's car, police said. The officer followed the Subaru, which had front-end damage, and watched as O'Brien swerved in and out of the lane by crossing over the double yellow line several times while heading east on Fort Salonga Road, police said. The officer stopped O'Brien, whose breath reeked of alcohol, had glassy, bloodshot eyes, slurred and sluggish speech and was very unsteady on his feet while performing poorly on several field sobriety tests, police said. O'Brien was arrested and charged with aggravated DWI, DWI, leaving the scene of an incident, unsafe lane change, unlawfully driving on or across sidewalk and no seat belt: driver.

Incidents

  • Someone found a learner's permit and turned it into Police Headquarters on June 9. The owner's father picked up the permit.
  • Police responded to Maple Avenue for a report of a dog bite. A woman says she was walking her dog between 4:30 and 5 p.m. June 9, and a woman and her German Shepherd were on the other side of the street. The German Shepherd got away from the other woman and bit the complainant's dog, causing puncture wounds. The other woman ran off with her German Shepherd. The woman wanted the incident filed for informational purposes, making the report June 10.
  • Loud music and fireworks were heard at Municipal Lot #1 at 10:52 p.m. June 10. An officer spoke with the group, who agreed to turn down the music and leave.
  • A woman says she found hypodermic needles in a plastic bag at the end of her Scudder Avenue driveway. The needles were brought to Police Headquarters and set to be destroyed. The incident was reported June 11.
  • A loud party was being thrown on Locust Road when a noise complaint was made at 8:55 p.m. June 12. The listed resident agreed to lower the music for the evening.
  • Police responded to a Schooner Road home for a report of a possible cobra in the backyard. The officer discovered that the snake was actually a toy. The incident was reported June 13.
  • A man was in Village Park walking his dog without a leash. An officer warned and admonished the man, telling him to have a leash on the dog during future walks. The incident happened June 13.
  • Two people were seen by police drinking beer from open containers while walking through
    Village Park and onto the Village dock. They were both issued summonses. The incident happened June 13.
  • Summonses were issued to the owners of cars illegally parked on Vail Street on June 14.
  • Six Peking ducks were dropped off in the fenced area of the Lewis Oliver Farm Sanctuary by an unknown person. A volunteer said she would like the incident documented and that she had also contacted the ASCPA Adoption Center. The ASPCA stated they would pick the ducks up. The incident was reported June 14.
  • An iPad was found on the side of Fort Salonga Road. The iPad was successfully returned to the man who owns it on June 14.
  • Police responded to Scudder Avenue for a report of a car accident with two men possibly fighting. A driver told police he almost collided with another car, and he had an argument with the other driver. The other driver left the scene before police arrived, and officers couldn't find him. The incident happened June 14.
  • Police responded to Constitution Square for a report of a possibly-intoxicated couple being loud on the dock. An officer interviewed the man, who said he and his girlfriend had dinner in town and were going to sleep on their boat for the night. The incident happened June 14.
