Northport Police Blotter: Drunken Driver Drove Wrong Way

ALSO: Another Northport resident was attacked by a hawk, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Dec. 20 through Jan. 2.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Matthias Kaeding, 47, of Northport, was driving a 2012 Volvo when he did not signal a turn from westbound Main Street to southbound Woodbine Avenue around 2 a.m. Jan. 2, police said. Kaeding crossed over the solid yellow line and was driving the wrong way, police said. Police stopped Kaeding, who had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, glassy and bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech, police said. Kaeding fell out of his vehicle when asked to perform field sobriety tests and was very unsteady on his feet, police said. He performed poorly on the field sobriety tests, police said. Kaeding was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated DWI, unsafe lane change, and failed to signal a turn.

Incidents

  • Police responded to a structure fire on Main Street on Dec. 22.
  • A boat capsized in Northport Harbor on Dec. 22. The owner of the boat told the Huntington harbormaster the boat would be removed by the end of the week.
  • The Northport Fire Department extinguished a fire at Chestnut Circle on Dec. 25.
  • A deer got stuck in a fence on Locust Road on Dec. 26. The deer had snapped his back leg in
    the fence and was hanging from the fence. The deer was euthanized, police said. Northport Highway retrieved the body.
  • Water was coming up from underground on Fort Salonga Road, causing a hazardous condition, on Dec. 29. Suffolk County Water Authority fixed the leak.
  • A woman reported that one of her tenants was attacked by a hawk when walking outside an apartment building on Main Street on Dec. 29. The property owner was concerned for her tenants' safety since this is not the first time someone was attacked by a hawk. Police left a message with a United States Department of Agriculture representative so the hawk could be safely removed.
  • Police responded to Main Street on Dec. 29 for a report of a loud argument. There was no argument, as the tenant was just playing video games.
  • Teenagers were caught stealing from a CVS on Larkfield Road on Dec. 29. The teens were released to Suffolk police, and their parents were informed.
  • Someone was reportedly trespassing at Northport Fish & Lobster on Dec. 31, but police could not find the person.
  • A man reported that he made a Zelle payment of $499.87 to what he thought was PSEG, but he believes it may have been fraudulent. The payment was still pending as of Dec. 31. The man wanted the payment to be reported at the request of Chase Bank.
  • A purse was found and turned in to Northport Police Headquarters on Jan. 2, and a message was left with the purse's owner on Facebook.
