Northport Police Blotter: Drunken Man Crashed Car Into Telephone Pole

An empty bottle of Svedka Vodka and a partially smoked marijuana cigarette were found in the car, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from May 30 through June 5.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Peter Kraus, 33, of Northport, was driving an unregistered moped without a helmet northbound on Laurel Avenue around 8:15 p.m. on June 3, police said. Police stopped Kraus, whose breath smelled of alcohol, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, he had slurred and sluggish speech, and he was unsteady on his feet, police said. Kraus performed poorly on field sobriety tests, police said. Kraus was highly intoxicated and was going into alcohol withdrawals, so he was brought to Huntington Hospital by Northport Rescue, police said. Kraus was arrested and charged with aggravated DWI, driving while intoxicated, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, unregistered limited-use vehicle, and three counts of equipment, inspection and insurance.
  • Michael Cutrone, 33, of East Moriches, was driving a car when he crashed into a telephone pole on Fort Salonga Road around 11:30 p.m. on June 4, police said. Police said Cutrone stated "I was driving the car" and then told police he was coming from the west and didn't know what happened. Cutrone's breath smelled of alcohol, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was slurred and sluggish, and he was unsteady on his feet, police said. Cutrone performed poorly on field sobriety tests, police said. An officer found a marijuana cigarette on the driver's side floorboard that was partially smoked and an empty bottle of Svedka Vodka in the back cargo area of the vehicle, police said. There was damage to the lawn of a Fort Salonga Road property and the telephone pole, police said. Cutrone was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated: BAC reading, unsafe lane change, consumption of cannabis in a motor vehicle, and unlawfully driving on or across sidewalk.

Incidents

  • A bat got into a Fransal Court home on May 31. Police were able to remove the bat without harming the animal.
  • A man on May 31 told police he was working on his computer when the screen went blue and a number came on the screen to call. The man called a different number and was having the issue fixed. When the company asked for his Social Security Number and a credit card, he hung up the phone and shut down his computer. The man has not suffered any monetary loss at the time of the report. The man said he was notifying his bank and credit cards for precautionary measures and was taking his computer to Best Buy for an inspection.
  • A woman on May 31 told police she lost her black wallet on Laurel Avenue.
  • Solicitors for Power Home Remodeling were asked to leave Seaview Avenue on May 31, as they did not have a permit to solicit in Northport Village.
  • Someone wired money to a fraudulent address on May 31.
  • A dog was found locked inside a vehicle at Stop & Shop around 5:30 p.m. on May 31. Police used a lockout kit to open the door.
  • A man reported on June 1 that his telephone number had been spoofed and he had
    been receiving calls regarding it all day. The man said one caller had been vulgar and abusive on a message left on his answering machine. Police listened to the message, and it included vulgar language and was of a belligerent nature, but not against the law, police said.
  • A hitchhiker was asked by police to stop hitchhiking on Main Street and walk on the sidewalk. The incident was reported on June 1.
  • A man found a bullet in the public washing machine of his apartment complex. Police found the 0.22 caliber round and brought it back to police headquarters to be properly disposed of. Police said the bullet was not suspicious because of its size and common use in sport/hunting rifles.
  • A large, dead bird found on Reservoir Avenue on June 2 was disposed of by police.
  • Someone fainted at Northport Fire Department and was brought to Huntington Hospital on June 2.
  • A woman told police she sideswiped a parked vehicle in Municipal Lot #9 on Union Place on June 2. The owner of the car that was hit was contacted by police.
  • A male picked up a flag and was walking around Northport Village Park with it on June 2. The flag was not damaged. Police warned and admonished the male.
  • A piece of guardrail was moved off of Eatons Neck Road on June 4.
  • Northport police went to Hewitt Drive to help Suffolk police with someone who overdosed on June 5. A medic found the person dead.
  • A bat was flying around a Laurel Avenue house on June 5. Northport police searched the home but could not find the bat.
  • A female fainted at Crab Meadow Beach on June 5. Northport police remained at the beach until Suffolk police and EMS arrived.
  • A summons was issued to the driver of a vehicle that was parked on the sidewalk of Robkes Country Inn on June 5.
  • A female fell in Northport Sweet Shop on June 5. Northport Rescue brought her to Huntington Hospital.
  • A motor vehicle crash was reported on Fort Salonga Road on June 5.
  • A couple reported their dog was bitten on Main Street on June 4. The owners did not call the police when the bite happened and did not get any information from the other dog's owner. The owners said they would be bringing their dog to the vet in the morning to have it checked out for injuries. Police told the couple it is a civil matter but would check the cameras downtown to see if the incident was captured on tape, which it was not.
