Northport Police Blotter: Drunken Driver Had Two Bags Of Cocaine
There were two other DWI arrests this week, police say. ALSO: A woman mistakes someone for her son and wouldn't let him leave her home.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent arrests and incidents from the Northport Village area, from Dec. 2 through Dec. 8.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- William Doherty, 55, of Commack, was driving a 2006 Dodge when an officer saw him swerve out of his lane on Fort Salonga Road around 11:30 p.m. Dec. 6, police say. When the officer stopped him, Doherty's breath reeked of alcohol, police said. Doherty was arrested and brought to Northport Village Police Department, where he took a breath test, police said. Doherty was charged with DWI: BAC reading, DWI and unsafe lane change.
- Thomas Christy, 40, of Northport, was driving a 2005 Honda on Fort Salonga Road at 1:35 a.m. Dec. 7 when he was stopped by an officer, who smelled alcohol on Christy's breath, police said. Christy was arrested. Police investigated and found two zip-lock baggies containing a white powdery substance, police said. The substance tested positive for cocaine, police said. Christy was brought to Northport Police Headquarters where he took a breath test. Christy was charged with unsafe lane change, fifth-degree criminal possession of controlled substance, DWI and DWI: BAC reading.
- Robert Piccola, 58, of Huntington, was driving a 2017 Jeep Wrangler westbound on Fort Salonga Road at 12:51 a.m. Dec. 8 when he was stopped by an officer, who smelled the strong odor of alcohol on Piccola's breath, police said. He was arrested and brought to police headquarters, where he took a breath test around 2 a.m., police said. Piccola was charged with DWI, DWI: BAC reading and unsafe lane change. He is due in court Monday evening.
Incidents
- A man was yelling in the street on Washington Place, and police asked if he needed any assistance. The man declined. The incident happened Dec. 2.
- Police responded to a home on Seaview Terrace regarding a broken water pipe. The woman showed police a rusty and rotted kitchen sink drain pipe with a spoon inside. The woman believes her ex-husband placed the spoon in the drain. The incident happened Dec. 2.
- A girl walked into headquarters with her father to report a man driving an older red Jeep Cherokee kept driving by her and smiling before eventually driving off. A report was filed for informational purposes, and police searched for the driver. The incident happened Dec. 3.
- Police responded to a Scudder Avenue home to settle a dispute. When an officer arrived, the caller and subject met them outside. The officer interviewed the subject, who said he was inside the caller's home, but the caller would not let him leave at first because the caller believed the subject was her son. Police helped the subject leave the home. The incident happened Dec. 8.
- A car drove into a pole and overturned on Ocean Avenue at 3:18 p.m. on Dec. 8.
- A woman went to headquarters to document a verbal incident that happened earlier in the day on Dec. 8. She said she parked her car, partially blocking the driveway in front of 251 Main St., when she went to get coffee. When she got back, a man was yelling at her for the way she parked her car and started banging on the hood of the car, causing a very minor chip in the paint. She left the area without any further incident, though decided to document it after speaking with her husband.
