Northport Police Blotter: Drunken Man Runs Off After 1-Car Crash
The man drove into the oncoming lane before running over a street sign and mailbox, police say. He faces DWI charges.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from July 27 through Aug. 2.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- Manuel Mejia, 33, of Middle Island, was arrested on Aug. 2 after police say he drove drunk. Officers responded to a one-car crash where the vehicle crossed into wrong-way traffic and ran over a street sign and mailbox before coming to a stop on a utility pole at the corner of Main Street and Norwood Avenue at 9:30 a.m., police said. A witness told police Mejia got out of the car and ran off east on Main Street, police said. An officer found Mejia, whose breath reeked of alcohol and eyes were glassy and bloodshot, and arrested him, police said. Mejia was charged with DWI: BAC reading, DWI, leaving the scene of an incident, operate motor vehicle by unlicensed driver, fail to keep right, unsafe lane change and unreasonable speed.
Incidents
- A man with a cut from a boat propeller at Village Dock was brought to Huntington Hospital by Northport Rescue on July 27.
- A man fainted at St. Paul's Methodist Church on July 28.
- A man turned a hand truck he found into police headquarters on July 28. He found it in the road on Main Street. The hand truck was placed in the temporary bin.
- Police were called to Village Park for a report of a large crowd at 4:45 p.m. July 29.
- Police responded to Schooner Road for a report of a landscaper doing work at 7:20 a.m. July 30. The landscaper was told to stop working until 8 a.m.
- Police were called at 1:25 p.m. July 30 to the Northport Post Office Lot for a report of an accident a few hours ago. An employee said at 10:15 a.m., a Ryder truck making a delivery backed into a post office vehicle, causing damage to the passenger door. After exchanging limited information, the driver left. The post office employee was told that for an accident report to be completed, the driver would need to return with all documents and insurance information.
- A resident of Norwood Avenue and a contractor were having a dispute on July 30, and police were called. The resident said there was a discrepancy over the price of the job and its details. The contractor was told to make a claim in Suffolk County Third District Court for the
money that he claimed was owed for the extra work. - A resident of Whispering Fields Drive said he's had multiple people walking through
his backyard on a private right of way. He was advised by police to post no trespassing signs, which he did. He then received an anonymous letter in the mail and requested to document the incident for informational purposes. The incident was reported July 30. - A man asleep in his car on Ocean Avenue told police he was just waiting for his friend. The incident happened July 30.
- Police responded to Highland Avenue for a reported dispute over a property line. The neighbor showed police a survey indicating the fence was within the property line. The complainant was satisfied with the information. The incident happened July 30.
- Police saw a boat being driven on Northport Harbor without registration numbers. The operator said he just got the vessel and didn't place the NYS temporary sticker. He was issued a summons. The incident happened July 30.
- An officer patrolling Northport Harbor saw a boat being driven at a high speed, causing a docked and moored boat to be disrupted. A summons was issued to the driver. The incident happened July 30.
- Loud music was being played by a group at Woodbine Marina, and they agreed to lower it after an officer spoke with them. The incident happened July 30.
- A sick raccoon was euthanized on Scudder Place on July 31.
- An officer saw a boat being operated in Northport Harbor without proper registration. A summons was issued. The incident happened July 31.
- A group was lighting off fireworks at the Laurel Avenue School parking lot. Police told the group to not set off fireworks, or they'd be issued summonses. The group left. The incident happened at 11:49 p.m. July 31.
- A group of youths were yelling and throwing garbage on Woodside Avenue. Police told them to clean the garbage and stop yelling. The incident happened 2:30 a.m. Aug. 1.
- Police responded to Goldenrod Avenue for a dispute over a tree truck parked in front of the complainant's driveway. The woman told police she wanted to document an incident that happened earlier where a truck delivering new shrubs and plantings parked in front of her
driveway while they were making a delivery to a neighbor's house. She said this has happened in the past and she wants to file this report for informational purposes only. The incident happened 9 a.m. Aug. 1. - Police responded to Main Street for a woman possibly in need of help. The woman, who was in her car, said she was waiting for her friend to finish errands. The incident happened Aug. 1.
- Police received a tip of a "reckless" 42-foot periwinkle blue vessel in Northport Harbor. An officer saw the boat heading into the Huntington Harbor area, and notified the Huntington Harbormaster. The incident happened Aug. 1.
- Police patrolling Northport Harbor saw someone driving a boat with a passenger under 12 years old who didn't have a flotation device and issued them a summons on Aug. 1.
- An officer, while riding in Northport Harbor, received a radio call stating someone was
operating an inflatable vessel with several children on board without personal flotation devices. The vessel was found, and the officer saw that two children under the age of 12 were without floats. The driver was issued a summons. The incident happened Aug. 1. - A loud party was being thrown on Bayview Avenue around 11:45 p.m. Aug. 1. Police spoke with the resident, who agreed to turn the music down for the night.

- A raccoon was removed from an Oak Street deck by police at 8:12 a.m. Aug. 2.
