Northport Police Blotter: Man Charged W/ DWI Had Opened Beers In Car
ALSO: American flags reported missing, landlords accused of recording audio of conversations, a dead goose was found, and more, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Aug. 15 through Aug. 21.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- Louis Megilo, 40, of Northport, was driving a 2015 Ford eastbound on Scudder Avenue
at a very slow rate of speed around 11:40 p.m. Aug. 15, police said. The registration on the car was suspended, police said. Megilo was stopped by police on Scudder Avenue, and his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was slurred, he was very unsteady on his feet, and his breath smelled of alcohol, police said. Megilo had multiple opened cans of Budweiser beer next to him on the passenger seat and on the passenger side floorboard, police said. Megilo performed poorly on several field sobriety tests administered, police said. He was arrested and charged with no/expired insurance, no/expired inspection certificate, driving while intoxicated: BAC reading, driving while intoxicated, operating motor vehicle w/ suspended registration, surrender of license and evidences of registration, and operating unregistered motor vehicle on highway.
Incidents
- A man on Aug. 15 reported to police that someone stole his dinghy and outboard motor at Scudder Park.
- A man told police on Aug. 15 that unknown charges were made to his debit card at multiple
locations and dates. The man said he did not make these purchases or the ATM withdrawal. The amount totaled $88. - A woman was taking a nap on the sidewalk at the CVS lot on Fort Salonga Road around 2 p.m. on Aug. 15. She told police she was asleep because it was hot outside.
- A man was admonished by police for drinking vodka in public on Fort Salonga Road at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 15.
- A woman was taking a nap on the sidewalk on Church Street around 4:20 p.m. on Aug. 15. The woman told police she was hot from walking and wanted to lay down for a little to rest. She said she was in no need of assistance and left the area.
- Police said they responded to Burr Avenue for a report of a "possibly suicidal" woman on Aug. 15. The woman told police she was on the phone with an insurance company for over three hours and got frustrated. She was not in need of any form of medical assistance, police said.
- A summons was issued to the driver of a 1980 Alfa Romero parked in a permit-only spot on Union Place on Aug. 16.
- Two landlords were warned and admonished on Aug. 16 after police discovered that cameras that could record audio were set up in and around their building on Woodbine Avenue.
- A summons was issued to the driver of a 2009 Honda parked in a no-parking zone on Bluff Point Road on Aug. 17.
- The driver of a commercial box truck was warned and admonished by police on Aug. 17 for driving through a residential neighborhood on Soper Avenue. The driver said he had
missed his turn while making a delivery and was unaware of the street restrictions. - A group of girls was warned and admonished for sitting on the ledge of a roof on Main Street on Aug. 17. The roof was not a public area.
- A dog got loose on Ocean Avenue on Aug. 17. Police could not find the dog.
- A driver reported a road rage incident on Aug. 18. He said a vehicle parked in front of the police station was tailgating his vehicle and flashing her high beams as he was traveling down Main Street. Police tried to contact the registered owner but were unsuccessful and believe she went to the theater to watch a show.
- A dead goose was found by the Plank House on Beach Avenue on Aug. 19. The goose was disposed of.
- Multiple trees owned by the village were damaged in a motor vehicle crash on Sea Cove Road on Aug. 19.
- A Visa credit card was found at Village Park on Aug. 19 and placed in the police station's temporary bin.
- A man fainted at John W. Engeman Theater on Aug. 19. Northport Rescue brought him to Huntington Hospital.
- A large group of youths was dispersed from Steers Beach by police around 9:15 p.m. Aug. 19.
- Two males stole merchandise from CVS Pharmacy on Fort Salonga Road on Aug. 19.
- A loud buzzing sound was coming from the LIPA power station around 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 20. Police confirmed with LIPA that there was no problem and residents did not have to be concerned.
- Two American Flags in the park next to Municipal Lot #1 were missing from their poles. Police said they would check footage from the park. The caller said she will replace the flags but would like the incident documented for informational purposes. The flags were possibly removed between 8 p.m. Aug. 19 and 6 a.m. Aug. 20.
- A woman was drinking beer in Village Park on Aug. 20. Police told her it is unlawful
to have an open container of alcohol in public. The woman apologized and discarded the empty can of beer immediately. She was warned and admonished by police. - A mailbox was damaged on Steers Avenue. The incident was reported Aug. 20.
- A hawk was reported to be potentially injured on Chestnut Circle on Aug. 20. Police determined the hawk was not hurt.
- A drunken male was not getting out of a taxi on Scudder Place around 3:10 a.m. Aug. 21. Police got in touch with the male's father, who helped his son get into the home.
- A man reported on Aug. 21 that he and his girlfriend returned from vacation to find the door of their Laurel Avenue apartment open. The man said it does not appear that any of his property was taken. There was no evidence of forced entry into the apartment, police said. The man was told to call police if he finds any of his property was stolen.
