Northport Police Blotter: Man Charged W/ DWI Overdosed On Alcohol
The man crashed into a parked car and drove away before police stopped him, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from May 23 through May 29.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- Matthew Brown, 69, of Northport, was accused of leaving the scene of a crash on Waterside Avenue around 10:20 p.m. May 23, police said. Brown, driving a 2002 Ford Expedition, crashed into a parked 2004 Saturn and drove away southbound on Waterside Avenue, police said. Police found Brown's car at Centershore Road and the Chalet Inn, police said. Brown was behind the steering wheel, parked in the middle of the parking lot with the engine running, police said. Police interviewed Brown, whose breath smelled of alcohol, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was slurred and sluggish, and he was very unsteady on his feet as he got out of his car, needing to use the door and the side of the car to steady himself, police said. Brown was too intoxicated to perform any standardized field sobriety tests, police said. Brown did not have the required interlock device in his car, police said. Centerport Rescue brought Brown to Huntington Hospital to be treated for alcohol overdose, police said. Brown consented to a blood test, police said. He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, installation and operation of ignition interlock, leaving the scene of an incident, unsafe lane change, and consumption of alcoholic beverages.
- Katherine Cruz-Bajurto, 24, of Northport, was driving a 2006 Honda westbound on Main
Street while speeding around 8:45 a.m. May 27, police said. Police stopped Cruz-Bajurto and interviewed her, and her eyes were glassy and bloodshot, her speech was slurred, she was very unsteady on her feet, and she had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath, police said. She could not keep her head up and constantly needed to rest her head on the driver's door, police said. Cruz-Bajurto performed poorly on several field sobriety tests, police said. She was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, consumption of alcoholic beverages, unreasonable speed, operate motor vehicle by unlicensed driver, and driving while intoxicated: BAC reading. - Byron Riverapirir, 26, of Huntington, was driving a 2019 Honda southbound on Waterside
Avenue when he crossed over the solid white shoulder marking line multiple times around 9:30 p.m. May 28, police said. Riverapirir was stopped on Norwood Avenue and police interviewed him and said Riverapirir's eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was slow and sluggish, he was unsteady on his feet, and he had a greenish tint film with raised taste buds on his tongue. Riverapirir was impaired based on the field sobriety tests police performed, police said. A glass jar with marijuana was found on the seat of his car, along with a joint inside a ginger ale bottle, police said. The substance tested positive for THC, police said. Riverapirir was arrested and charged with driving ability impaired by drugs, no/expired inspection certificate, unsafe lane change, consumption of cannabis in a motor vehicle, and equipment: tinted windows.
Incidents
- Police helped someone who dropped his keys down a sewer well on Main Street on May 23.
- A woman who parks on Woodbine Avenue said that over the last couple of months, if not
longer, her vehicle has sustained damage, but she doesn't know how. The woman asked for a police report for her insurance company to have the vehicle repaired. The incident was reported on May 23. - Someone was issued a ticket for having an unleashed dog at Village Park on May 24.
- A deer was freed from a fence by police on James Street on May 24.
- A man reported a possible social media scam to police on May 24. He told police he was
messaging back and forth to someone through Snapchat messenger and ended up sending obscure photos of himself to a person he did not know, who then threatened to post the pictures on social media unless he sent $500. Police told the man this is a common scam and to delete his Snapchat account, which he did. The man did not send the money. - A person was found using a bow and arrow at Steers Park on May 25. Police told him he is not allowed to shoot a bow and arrow on Northport Village property. The person was warned.
- A gold bracelet was found in Village Park on May 25 and was turned in to police.
- A woman said she was attacked by a hawk on Main Street on May 25. She suffered a cut to her ear, and she went to Huntington Hospital for treatment.
- A summons was issued to a driver who parked in a no-parking zone on Scudder Avenue on May 26.
- A stolen purse was reported at Maroni Cuisine on May 26.
- A lost dog without a collar was successfully returned to its owner on May 27.
- A Lisa Drive resident reported on May 28 that someone rummaged through his car but did not steal anything.
- A Franklin Street resident reported on May 28 that someone went through his car. The resident's Ring camera footage showed a man open his vehicle door around 2:30 a.m. and go through his vehicle for a short period of time before walking back towards the road. No items were stolen from the vehicle. The man said his vehicle was unlocked in the driveway.
- Police helped a driver whose vehicle ran out of gas on May 29.
