Northport Police Blotter: Man Charged W/ DWI Refuses Breath Tests

He had previously been convicted of a DWI 10 years ago, police say. A woman was also charged with a DWI this week, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent arrests and incidents from the Northport Village area, from Sept. 23 to Sept. 29.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Heidi Bruzzi, 38, of Huntington, was arrested on a Northport Village arrest warrant, police said. She was charged with failure to appear on Sept. 25.
  • James Mellon, 51, of East Northport, was arrested on a Northport Village arrest warrant, police said. He was charged with operating motor vehicle with suspended registration on Sept. 25.
  • Erica Freeburg, 35, of Northport, drove her Jeep into a parked vehicle while traveling northbound on Burr Avenue, police said. An officer interviewed Freeburg, whose breath reeked of alcohol, had glassy and bloodshot eyes, slurred and sluggish speech, and she was very unsteady on her feet, police said. She performed poorly on several standardized field sobriety tests and was arrested, police said. Freeburg was charged with DWI and unsafe lane change on Sept. 25.
  • Thomas Nosek, 62, undomiciled, didn't show up on an active bench warrant, police said. He was charged with third-degree bail jumping and failure to appear on Sept. 27.
  • Stephen Terry, 60, of Northport, was driving a Volkswagen westbound on Fort Salonga Road when he swerved out of his lane and over the solid white line, police said. An officer stopped him on Centerport Road and noticed Terry had a strong smell of alcohol on his breath, glassy and bloodshot eyes, sluggish and slurred speech, police said. He performed poorly on field sobriety tests and refused to take a pre-screen breath test, police said. After Terry was arrested and brought back to police headquarters, he refused an Intoxilyzer 9000 chemical test, police said. His car was impounded at police headquarters due to a previous DWI conviction in July 2009, police said. Terry was charged with DWI, refused pre-screen test and unsafe lane change on Sept. 28.

Incidents

  • Loud music was being played at Village Dock at 1:09 a.m. on Sept. 23. Police asked one of the people on the boats to turn the music down, which they did...until 1:33 a.m. when loud music was once again reported coming from the docks. An officer shut the music down for the night.
  • Police responded to Village Park on a report of a woman "acting strange." The officer found the woman, who was simply dancing and working out with her headphones in. The incident happened Sept. 23.
  • An employee at Main Street Cafe told police that patrons had caused a scene at the cafe and left around 10 p.m. on Sept. 23. Police found them at a nearby parking lot and advised them not to return to Main Street Cafe for the rest of the night.
  • A woman believes papers were stolen from her car parked on Mar Kan Drive on Sept. 25.
  • A dead dog was found on Fort Salonga Road on Sept. 26. Police found the owner, who recovered their dog.
  • A white metal ring with eight clear stones was found in the gravel parking lot of the Britannia Yachting Center on Sept. 27 and handed into police headquarters.
  • A woman went to police headquarters to tell them that someone she knows walked into and pushed her with her shoulder while she was on the village dock during Sept. 22's Cow Harbor Day festivities. Police told her a report would be taken for informational purposes only, which the woman was satisfied with. Police told her to call them at the time of the incident if she feels she's being harassed. The woman reported the above incident on Sept. 27.
  • Neighbors on Whispering Fields Drive were arguing over where the complainants could walk their dog. The complainants said they would stay away from the property in the future. The incident happened Sept. 27.
  • Police were called on a large group of kids on Steers Beach around 8:13 p.m. on Sept. 28. The kids began to scatter when police arrived. The officer was able to corral the group together and wait for them to get picked up via Uber or their parents.
  • Police were called on a large group of kids on Clipper Drive. The officer ordered the kids to leave the area and get picked up via Uber or their parents. The incident happened at 10:03 p.m. on Sept. 28.
  • A man thought to be hitchhiking on Ocean Avenue was actually waiting for a taxi on Sept. 29.
