  • Jonathan Haas, 24, of Centerport, was speeding in a 2018 Toyota with a damaged front bumper going eastbound on Fort Salonga Road around 11 p.m. May 1, police said. An officer tried to turn around and follow the Toyota when Haas passed the officer while still speeding, police said. Police stopped Haas as he pulled into Husco gas station at 85 Fort Salonga Road, police said. Haas got out of the Toyota and examined his damaged front bumper, police said. Police interviewed Haas, whose breath smelled of alcohol, had glassy and bloodshot eyes, slurred and sluggish speech, was very unsteady on his feet and performed poorly on several field sobriety tests, police said. Haas refused to take a chemical breath test at the Northport Police Headquarters, police said. Police determined Haas hit a mailbox on Fort Salonga Road, as well as a nearby "No Standing Anytime" parking sign, police said. Police found several parts of the Toyota's damaged bumper, including Haas's front license plate, police said. Haas was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, refuse pre-screen test, unreasonable speed, improper front bumper, and leaving the scene of an incident.
