Northport Police Blotter: Man Nearly Scammed After Computer Freezes
ALSO: A horse got loose, a man fell asleep in another man's car, and someone tried to open credit cards in another's name, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Nov. 14 through Nov. 20.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- Someone was trying to open credit cards in a woman's fiance's name. The incident was reported to police on Nov. 14. The woman did not sustain any financial loss. Police told her to freeze her accounts and monitor them.
- A woman who fainted at Northport Library on Nov. 16 was alert when police arrived. She did not need further medical attention.
- Someone reported wires on fire on Jay Court around 2:30 p.m. Nov. 16. The wires were no longer arching or sparking when police arrived, but an officer did see a large tree limb hanging on wires in a driveway. The wires were live, as the power was still on in the area. The driveway was taped off until PSEG LI arrived.
- A Northport resident went to police headquarters on Nov. 16 to report an attempted phone scam. The man was using his laptop when an alert message appeared on the screen and the computer was no longer operational. The man said the alert advised him to call the Microsoft Security Center at 210-817-9706 (which is a scam number). The complainant further states that when he called the number, a man with a Middle Eastern accent answered the phone and immediately warned the man about the seriousness of the matter and that his personal information was being compromised. The man said the Security Center directed him to go to Walmart and purchase two gift cards worth $500 each. The man, while en route to Walmart, realized he was being scammed and turned around and went home. The man said the "Security Center" called him numerous times, but he has not picked up, nor did he ever give any personal or banking information.
- A woman who fainted at the American Legion on Nov. 16 was brought to Huntington Hospital by Northport Rescue.
- Two Verizon employees were soliciting on Chestnut Circle on Nov. 17. Police warned and admonished them for soliciting.
- An unleashed dog on Franklin Street was found and returned to its owner on Nov. 18.
- An unleashed dog on Fifth Avenue was found and returned to its owner on Nov. 18.
- A man fell and suffered injuries at Gunthers Tap Room on Nov. 19. Northport Rescue brought him to Huntington Hospital.
- Someone involved in a motor vehicle crash on Ocean Avenue on Nov. 20 said they felt head and chest pain. Northport Rescue brought him to Huntington Hospital.
- A horse got loose near Soper Avenue around 8:10 a.m. Nov. 20. Suffolk police had the horse under control by the time Northport police arrived. Northport police helped get the horse off the main road.
- A vehicle parked on Woodbine Avenue at the corner of Main Street was damaged, its owner told police on Nov. 20. The vehicle had its passenger side mirror knocked off and there were multiple scuffs alongside the front and back doors.
- A man found another man sleeping inside his vehicle around 7 p.m. Nov. 20 on Main Street. Police woke the man up, who was drunk and did not know where he was. He told police he was staying over at his relative's house for the weekend and mistakenly entered the wrong vehicle. He agreed to go back to his relative's home.
