Northport Police Blotter: Phone Scam, Lost Wallet, Dog Missing
ALSO: An identity theft was reported, and officers rescued an elderly man who fell into the water near the dock, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from May 8 through May 14.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.
- A white dog got loose on Main Street on May 8. Police could not find the dog.
- A phone found in Municipal Lot #2 was turned in to police headquarters on May 9. The woman who owns the phone retrieved it that night.
- A dog got loose on Laurel Avenue on May 9. Police found the dog and brought him back to the station. The dog's owner retrieved him.
- A Scudder Place resident reported a phone scam on May 10. The woman said she got a phone call from a person she didn't know who said they were calling from Optimum Cable Services and that she owed $186. The woman said she provided a Marriot Chase Visa Credit Card, but the caller refused and demanded debit card information be provided. The complainant states the debit card request seemed suspicious and quickly hung up without providing any further information. The woman said she did not sustain any charges on her credit card but would like the incident documented for informational purposes.
- Solicitors from Ecoshield Pest Solutions were warned and admonished about soliciting in Northport Village after dusk around 5:30 p.m. May 10.
- An elderly man fell off the dock and into the water around 2:10 p.m. May 11. Police found the man in the water hanging onto the dock. Police helped the man out of the water and he refused any medical attention.
- Someone found a gold American express credit card in the middle of Main Street on May 11. Police contacted the card's owner, who said he would pick it up next week.
- A man went to police headquarters and told officers on May 12 that he collided with a white work truck parked on Main Street in an area that was directed by flag persons. The man said he was directed incorrectly by the flag person, resulting in him crashing into one of the white work trucks. This resulted in the passenger side headlight of the owner's motor vehicle being broken. Police were unable to investigate at scene because it appeared the work was completed before the owner went to headquarters. Officers needed both vehicle owners to fill out a MVC104A.
- Threats were reportedly made by a student at Laurel Avenue School on May 12.
- A Whales Tale employee was reportedly being violent and refusing to leave the business on May 12.
- A possible identity theft was committed sometime between Jan. 9 and Jan. 17. The incident was documented on May 13.
- A woman told police on May 13 that she lost her wallet. She said the wallet contained her NYS driver's license, several bank cards, and a $100 bill. Police completed an MV78B for the woman and told her to cancel her bank accounts and report back to the police if she sustained any losses in the accounts.
- A woman injured her shoulder when she fell on May 13. She told police she tripped over the curb leading into Municipal Lot #1 around 10:40 p.m. Northport Rescue brought her to Huntington Hospital. Police forwarded the raised curb report to the Northport Village Administrator.
- Someone was issued tickets instead of being arrested for aggravated unlicensed operation and operating without an interlock on Harbour Point Drive on May 14.
- A man in the water at the end of Winkle Point Road was reportedly in distress on May 14. The Huntington Harbormasters and other officials asked a swimmer about 100 yards off the beach if he was in distress, but he was not. The Coast Guard was called off.
