Northport Police Blotter: Phone Scam Reported; Loose Dogs Corralled

A scammer told a woman there was a fraud alert on her Bank of America account...but the woman does not bank with them, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Jan. 29 through Feb. 4.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • A dog got loose on Avenue B on Jan. 29, but police returned him to his owner.
  • A Willow Court resident on Jan. 29 reported a phone scam. She told police she got a phone call from a Bank of America representative stating that there was a possible fraud alert on her account. The woman said she does not have a Bank of America account and when he asked her for the last three numbers of her credit card she knew it was a phone scam and hung up the phone without releasing any further information. The complainant did not suffer any loss and wanted to document the incident for informational purposes.
  • A man reported he purchased fake Apple AirPods online on Feb. 1. He told police that about a week ago, he reached out to someone on Facebook Marketplace inquiring about Apple AirPods that were for sale. After discovering they were fake he contacted the person who agreed to return partial payment.
  • Two dogs got loose on Beach Avenue on Feb. 3. Officers found the dogs but could not get them leashed. The dogs' owner was notified and came to the area to help. Both dogs were reunited with the owner, who said they pushed through a window of her home. The owner was warned that she would receive a summons for a village code violation of an unleashed dog if the dogs got loose again.
  • A man fainted and was having difficulty breathing at Napper Tandys on Feb. 3. He was conscious and alert when police arrived. Northport Rescue brought him to Huntington Hospital.
  • Northport police responded to McDonald's on Fort Salonga Road on Feb. 4 to help Suffolk police with a possible overdose. Northport police provided assistance until East Northport rescue came.
  • A summons was issued to an illegally parked vehicle on Main Street on Feb. 4.
