Northport Police Blotter: Police Called On 2 Ice Cream Trucks
The caller was concerned about the ice cream trucks emitting diesel fumes around children, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from May 9 through May 15.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- A group that was fishing was asked to leave Steers Beach on May 9 after they were possibly setting up a tent.
- A vehicle was issued a summons after it was parked in a school drop-off zone at Little Sprouts By The Sea on May 10.
- Two solicitors on Washington Place on May 10 were asked to leave since they did not have permits. The solicitors said they did not know about the Village Code and agreed to leave.
- A construction worker urinated on a tree on a Laurel Avenue property on May 10. Police told the foreman that he and his crew needed to seek proper bathroom facilities.
- A motorcyclist crashed into a deer on Vernon Valley Road on May 10. The rider was brought to Huntington Hospital.
- A man said his front passenger tire ruptured when he drove over a pothole as he was driving south on Woodbine Avenue about 150 yards North of Fort Salonga Road on May 10.
- A vehicle was issued a summons after it was parked in a school drop-off zone at Little Sprouts By The Sea on May 12.
- Police tried to help a man collect his belongings from a Main Street apartment on May 12. The man was unable to get all his belongings, including his medication. The landlord had changed the locks to his apartment. Police told the man to contact the landlord regarding the rest of his property.
- A woman on May 13 reported her vehicle, parked on Fort Salonga Road, may have been broken into overnight. She said when she entered her vehicle, she found her phone
charger wrapped around her steering wheel. The woman said her vehicle was unlocked and there were other valuables in the car in plain sight that were not stolen The woman said there are other people living in her building but she did not ask if they had gone in her car. - A truck brought down electrical wires on School Street after it did not have enough clearance. Police moved the wires off the road, and Verizon was notified. The incident happened on May 13.
- A car crash was reported on Elwood Road on May 13.
- Police were called to Steers Park for a report of two ice cream trucks idling on May 14. The caller said they were concerned about the ice cream trucks emitting diesel fumes around the children. Police spoke with the ice cream truck owners, who both had valid Northport Village permits, and confirmed that their vehicles' engines were not running. The trucks were only operating their refrigerator's generators which were not causing any hazard or noticeable fumes. Both of the trucks' exhaust outlets are on the opposite sides of the trucks, pointing away from the ball fields, the ice cream truck service windows, and patrons.
- A Waterside Avenue man was burning the fallen limbs and branches from the trees on
his property on May 14. The man had the fire contained to a fire container/fire pit. However, the fire was in the middle of a wooded lot and surrounded by dry leaves and other flammable ground covers. The man was told to extinguish the fire and police remained until the fire was fully put out. - Workers on May 14 were preparing a Laurel Avenue building for asbestos abatement work scheduled to be done next week. The employee works for Viking Inspections and has
authorization from the owner Michael Kenduck of Cruse Real Estate to access the building. - An older man and younger man were seen shoving each other near the Northport dock on May 14 when they got into a white SUV and left the area. Police could not find the car.
- A fire alarm was going off at a Waterside Avenue home on May 14. The Northport Fire Department found multiple buckets within the home emitting a strong odor of what was possibly chlorine. Firefighters removed all the buckets from the house and police got a hold of the residents, who said they hired a company to scent-clean the home. The homeowner was told to stop the activity and have the company properly dispose of the chemicals.
- Three motorized scooters that were not registered were found in Municipal Lot #1 on May 15. The owners did not realize the scooters needed to be registered. The owners were warned and admonished by police, and a friend of theirs came to pick up the scooters.
