Northport Police Blotter: Potential Check Scam
A woman received a $5,000 check that was declined by a bank, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from March 16 through March 22.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- Nicolas Deguido, 22, undomiciled, stole cigarettes from a vehicle on Laurel Avenue, police say. He was arrested and charged with petty larceny on March 21.
Incidents
- A group of kids around a fire pit were making noise on Fifth Avenue. When police arrived, the teen and his friends agreed to douse the fire and went inside his apartment. The incident happened March 16.
- A woman went to police headquarters on March 17 to report a possible check scam. She said she received a check for $5,000 which was intended for a friend, and the check was declined by the bank. The woman has no bank transaction history paperwork or proof of financial loss. She was told to go to her bank, confirm that she did suffer a financial loss and request all relevant
paperwork in regards to the check. - Police responded to a Harborview Drive home for a report of a suspicious vehicle parked in the roadway with its headlights facing his residence. The man said his next door neighbor, who drives a green Porsche, has been parking her car in front of his home and using her cell phone for long periods of time. He said that he has trouble sleeping due to the glare of the headlights illuminating his bedroom. The man only wished to document the incident, which happened 9:05 p.m. March 19.
- A woman went to police headquarters to report that she was still receiving unwanted texts from someone who appears to be upset over various topics and calling from a spoofed cellphone. Police reviewed the texts, and found while they were unwanted, they didn't rise to the level of a criminal offense. A report was taken for informational purposes on March 20.
- A bicyclist not wearing a helmet fell on Scudder Avenue and was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital by Northport Rescue. A witness said the bicyclist was riding at a fast pace without a helmet before losing control, and the bike only had rear brakes. The bicycle was taken for safekeeping, and the mother said she'd go to the hospital. The incident happened March 20.
- A woman went to police headquarters to report someone opened a PayPal account in her name. She said she didn't suffer any financial loss, but the PayPal account total was $4,436.74. She said she needed a police report to have the account removed from her credit report. The incident happened March 20.
- A business owner began cutting the tops of someone's trees, but he was on the wrong client's property. He agreed to cease work until a property survey was taken. The incident happened March 20.
- There was a large gathering at Scudder Park that violated Gov. Andrew Cuomo's executive order against gatherings during the spread of the new coronavirus. An officer dispersed the crowd. The incident happened March 20.
- Police responded to Delta Gas Station on Fort Salonga Road for a report of the store selling N95 masks. The store manager said he buys the masks from his regular supplier and sells them in his store like any other item. Police didn't observe any violations. The incident happened March 21.
- A woman was yelling via an anonymous 911 call, but it turned out to be a prank call. The incident happened March 21.
- A man overdosed on alcohol on Fort Salonga Road on March 21. He was brought to Huntington Hospital by Northport Rescue.
- Police responded to Franklin Street for a report of a male with a fever, cough and the chills. An officer used an N95 mask. A paramedic, along with staff, determined the male did not
meet the high risk criteria to be transported to Huntington Hospital. He was advised to isolate himself from other residents at the home. The incident happened March 22.
