Northport Police Blotter: Stranger Offered Ride To Children

The children told officers that a man they didn't know, who was driving a white four-door sedan, asked if they wanted a ride, police say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Aug. 31 through Sept. 6.

The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Parents and their children went to police headquarters on Aug. 31 to report a suspicious event that happened the day before around 4:45 p.m. The kids said as they were walking through the Harbor Point Condos area, a man they didn't know in a white four-door sedan drove past them, said hello and then offered to give them a ride. The kids stated they refused the ride and continued their walk as the man left the area. Police searched the area to no avail. The incident was documented.
  • A man went to police headquarters on Aug. 31 to file a report regarding a social media group that was making negative comments about his mother's Main Street store because of Black Lives Matter signs posted in the windows. "At this time none of the comments are threatening in nature nor are calling for violence," police said. The man wanted to file an informational report for documentation purposes.
  • A sick raccoon found on Burt Avenue was successfully relocated by police on Aug. 31.
  • A group of teenagers at Steers Beach were dispersed by police at 9:11 p.m. Aug. 31.
  • A Main Street business was being power-washed at 7:25 a.m. Sept. 1. Police spoke with the employee, who agreed to wait until 8 a.m. to continue power-washing.
  • A sick raccoon found on Grove Place was euthanized and disposed of on Sept. 1.
  • Someone found an iPhone on Fort Salonga Road and Cherry Street, and they dropped it off at police headquarters on Sept. 2. The phone has a shattered glass screen. It was placed in the temporary bin.
  • An officer saw a woman banging on the window of Gunther's Tap Room on Main Street at 4:40 p.m. Sept. 2. The woman was slurring her words and having trouble maintaining her balance. She told police she was drunk and had been escorted out of Gunther's by the bar's owner. She became "more and more irate and started yelling and screaming that she needs help," police said. Northport Rescue brought her to Huntington Hospital.
  • A sick raccoon found on Washington Place was euthanized and disposed of on Sept. 2.
  • Police responded to Harbour Point Condominium for a report of someone refusing to leave private property. The officer interviewed both parties. The complainant said the driver of a vehicle was parked on private property for 10 minutes and refusing to leave. The driver said he's an Uber driver who dropped off a woman and parked his vehicle to wipe it down when the man approached him telling him to leave. The Uber driver agreed to leave once he wiped the vehicle down. The incident happened Sept. 2.
  • Police responded to Sailfish Place for a report of a lost elderly woman. The woman said a Lyft driver dropped her off at the wrong place. She was taken to her daughter's house by police. The incident happened Sept. 2.
  • Youths were climbing up and down a building at Village Park at 10:10 p.m. Sept. 2. Police spoke with the group, who agreed to leave.
  • Someone was operating a vessel in Northport Bay and towing an inflatable tube with riders without having a proper observer. An officer saw this and issued the operator a ticket. The incident happened Sept. 3.
  • Numerous bicyclists were bothering people in Village Park on Sept. 3. They were warned and admonished by police before leaving the park.
  • A vehicle was blocking the roadway on Woodbine Avenue on Sept. 3. Police remained until the car was towed.
  • A disabled truck was pulled back onto Fort Salonga Road by Northport Highway on Sept. 4.
  • A man went to police headquarters on Sept. 5 to report excessive unwanted phone calls. He said multiple people he didn't know were Facetiming his cell "all night." The callers knew his name, he said, but he didn't know the callers. He wanted to document the incident.
  • Police responded to Scudder Place for a report of a dispute between neighbors on Sept. 5. A man said that his next-door neighbor screamed obscenities at him from over his fence for no apparent reason. Police tried to speak with the neighbor but could not make contact. The complainant filed a report for informational purposes.
  • An intoxicated man was laying on the sidewalk of Main Street at 11:45 p.m. Sept. 6. Northport Rescue brought him to Huntington Hospital.
