Northport Police Blotter: Woman Thwarts Attempted Phone Scam
A caller pretended she was her daughter and needed bail money, police say. ALSO: A Northport man was robbed in NYC, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from July 3 through July 9.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.
- People who were fishing on private property on Hawkins Drive were asked to leave, which they did, on July 3.
- A Northport resident said he was robbed in the city and the robbers stole his phone and wallet, police said. They charged more than $17,000 to his credit card, he told police. The man filed a police report with the NYPD, but the robbers mailed a gift card to his home set to arrive on July 6. He told Northport police he was concerned the robbers will try to pick the gift card up at his home, police said.
- Fireworks were reported in the area of Scudder Park on July 4. Police found someone who appeared to be cleaning up the fireworks. They were warned and admonished for setting off fireworks.
- An officer was driving north on Woodbine Avenue on July 4 when another driver heading south crossed over the double-yellow line, causing both vehicles' side mirrors to clash, police said. Both vehicles were undamaged. Police issued the driver a summons for crossing over the double-yellow line.
- A truck pulled down low-hanging wires and bent the pole over on Prospect Avenue on July 5. PSEG was called to repair the pole and wires.
- A man overdosed on Hilton Avenue on July 6 and was taken to Huntington Hospital.
- A deer got trapped on Laurel Avenue on July 6. Police freed the deer.
- A woman said she received a phone call from a 419 number around 10:10 a.m. July 6 from a female who she believed at the time was her daughter crying, who said she had been arrested and needed money to be released. She then put a male "police officer" on the phone. The "officer" told the woman he needed money wired to an account for her daughter's release. The woman hung up the phone and called her daughter's cell phone to check the legitimacy of the call. The daughter answered and said she was at her dentist appointment and safe.
- Officers recovered a stolen kayak from Prospect Avenue on July 6.
- A dingy and outboard was reported either lost or stolen on Village Dock on July 7.
- A woman was driving on Summit Avenue on July 7 when her rooftop cargo box caught onto a low hanging wire, which came down. PSEG and Verizon were notified.
- A man reported credit card fraud at police headquarters on July 7. He said his card incurred about 25 charges worth $17,583 on July 2. He said he filed a report with the NYPD because he was in the city when the charges were made. The man said he thinks his credit card was stolen while he was in the city the night before. The man has not suffered financial loss and is monitoring his credit activity.
- A summons was issued to people who were fishing on private property on Hawkins Drive on July 7.
- Someone was issued a ticket instead of being arrested for drinking alcohol in public at Steers Beach on July 7.
- A drunken man was refusing to leave Feed and Grain on July 8. Police found the man outside the restaurant arguing with the manager. The man agreed to leave and was escorted home by police.
- An injured deer was euthanized by police on Mariners Lane on July 8. The Northport Highway Department was called to dispose of the carcass.
- A sick goose died in Municipal Lot #2 on July 8 before wildlife rescue could come help it.
- Three dogs were left in a vehicle on Main Street on July 9. Police called the owner, who said the Tesla has a "dog mode" which maintains a safe temperature while the driver is out of the car. Police inspected the temperature and found it acceptable.
