Northport Power Station Event Raises $11K For Childhood Cancer Research
Northport and Island Park employees shaved their heads and donated hair to support children battling cancer, officials say.

NORTHPORT, NY — Employees at National Grid Ventures traded their hair for hope, raising $11,000 to support childhood cancer research during a charity event at the Northport Power Station.
The fundraiser, held in partnership with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, brought employees together for raffles and a breakfast event, culminating in dozens of volunteers shaving their heads in solidarity with children undergoing cancer treatment. Some participants also donated their hair to help create wigs for patients experiencing hair loss.
Barber Joseph Matt, of Barber Chops in Massapequa, provided the haircuts, adding a lighthearted twist with his signature “chance wheel” of unpredictable styles before participants ultimately went fully shaved.

Hair collected from long-haired volunteers will be donated to Wigs for Kids, a nonprofit that provides wigs to children facing hair loss due to chemotherapy, radiation, and other medical conditions.
The effort extended beyond Northport. Employees at the E.F. Barrett Power Station in Island Park also participated in a similar event on March 12, joining their colleagues in getting “bad haircuts” before shaving their heads to support children battling cancer.

National Grid officials said the initiative reflects the company’s broader commitment to giving back to the communities it serves. Through its Grid for Good program, the company supports a range of charitable organizations, including Long Island Cares, Island Harvest, Toys for Tots, and the John Theissen Children’s Foundation.
“We believe in acting as a force for good in all that we do, and this event is one more way we’re able to bring our community together and support a worthwhile cause while strengthening our ties with residents,” said Jim Flannery, Chief Operating Officer of National Grid Ventures. “I’m proud to have been part of today’s event, and to be able to raise this money in support of St. Baldrick’s, underscoring our commitment to good corporate citizenship.”
