Northport Resident, U.S. Veteran, Honored By New York Mets: Video

Scott Gibney's military career was highlighted by the Mets during the broadcast of a game against the Yankees. He served as a Navy captain.

NORTHPORT, NY — A Northport Village resident and United States veteran received a nice surprise when the New York Mets featured him as the team's Veteran of the Game on Sunday. Scott Gibney's military career was highlighted during the SNY broadcast when the Mets played their crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees.

Gibney, a U.S. Navy captain, served overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Desert Storm. He received two Meritorious Service Medals, a Navy Commendation Medal, two Navy Achievement Medals, a National Defense Service Medal, and Naval Overseas Service Ribbon.

"Thanks to the greatest military force across the globe, America remains land of the free and home of the brave," Mets utility star Jeff McNeil said in the segment. "During each Mets game, we recognize the Veteran of the Game."

Gibney graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point and spent 30 years in the U.S. Navy. He and his wife, Susan, own a college admissions consulting company: Gibney College Solutions LLC - based in Northport. They are the proud parents of three.
