Sailor, 'Most Gentle Kitty': Northport Adoptable Pet Of The Week

NORTHPORT, NY — Sailor, a 6-month-old kitten with Russian blue-like fur and golden eyes, is the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Kitten of the Week.

Sailor was rescued from the Centerport Yacht Club, according to Lora Wild, a volunteer with the rescue.

"He showed up and was hanging around begging for food," Wild said. "Everyone he met fell in love with him. On New Year’s Eve he went to a window and put his paw up against it as if he was asking for help. He went to the right window because it just so happened to be where one of the directors of the Northport Cat Rescue was having dinner."

Sailor is FIV positive, Wild said. FIV is short for feline immunodeficiency virus and is "difficult to transmit," she said. An aggressive fight that causes a deep bite wound like ones that occur among outdoor territorial cats, is the primary mode of transmission, Wild said.

"Cats with FIV can live a long and healthy life and live happily with other cats and never spread their virus," Wild said. "Sailor is the most gentle kitty and can live perfectly fine with other cats and dogs."

He was fostered with both types of animals and loves to make new friends, according to Wild. His best buddy in his foster home was a dog.

"Sailor is affectionate and loving," she said. "He loves to be held and will melt in your arms. He loves to play with other cats or dogs or by himself with his toys. He will purr and roll over for belly rubs. He is absolutely perfect. He did everything he could to be rescued, charming everyone he met while on the streets. Now it is our turn to help find him what he has been looking for; a home and a family of his own."

Sailor is currently at Petco Commack, waiting patiently for someone to come visit and fall in love with him.

Sailor is neutered, has all his shots, is litter box-trained, micro-chipped and FELV negative but FIV positive.
