NORTHPORT, NY - From Northport-East Northport Schools: Students who love to get lost in the world of books find solace in Northport Middle School’s “Create Time to Read Club,” which meets every Wednesday after school. The club spends time each week reading some of the most popular young adult titles aloud, such as “No More Dead Dogs” and “Bridge to Terabithia,” and then discussing themes, character development and other elements of fiction with one another.

“I think reading a good book is more enjoyable than sitting around and watching television,” said Liam, one of the club members. “And it’s so much better for your brain, too.”

Many students vocalized that when they joined the club, they were unsure of how many of their peers would be involved — and were pleasantly surprised at the regular turn out.

“So many kids don’t really seem to like to read, and it kind of makes me sad,” said Grace, a regular club-attendee. “It’s really awesome to come to a club where everyone is on the same page…literally.”

Students hope to get more of their peers involved and to expand the club, ultimately teaching more students how enjoyable and beneficial reading can be.
