Scouts and Venturers Have Fun Developing Their Leadership Skills!

This past summer more than 45 youth participants & staff participated in the BSA National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and rocked BHSC.

The Boy Scout's Suffolk County Council (SCC) 2016 Summer National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course was a huge success with five fun filled days of learning and game playing excitement! There were participants from SCC as well as from other Councils including the Greater NYC Council and Theodore Roosevelt Council. This was one of our most inclusive courses ever according to Course Director Tammy Campagnola-Levinsky. We had Boys Scouts and Venturers including 8 female Venturers from 4 different SCC Venturing Crews participating. The course was over subscribed and we ended up having a wait list for registrations similar to recent spring courses.

Participants were given/taught new leadership and communication tools/skills designed to support their home units more effectively and in addition they now have the ability to transfer those skills to their school, family, other activates. Our youth staff and adult advisers worked hard to enhance an already great experience and participants got to participate in an overnight outpost where they put their new skills to use while using GPS’s to find their meals, campsite, and gear. It was reported to be one of the highlights of their learning experience during the course, outside of the ice cream dance social on day 3. Not only did the participants have the most Super-FUN-tastic time ever during the 5-day course, but the youth and adult staff did too! You can take a peek here:

The course’s closing feast was an enthusiastically social sing along slide show compilation of the many moments shared, where all of the great new and old friends reminisced the time spent together. Parents and other distinguished guests were able to be present and experience firsthand the new friendships formed and growth made over the course.

To say that the NYLT course is just a training for Scouting would be an understatement. It is an opportunity not to be missed for both Boy Scouts and male and female Venturers to gain skills and tools that will be able to apply personally for a life time! The spring 2017 NYLT course if filling up quickly. For more information or to register go to https://www.sccbsa.org/nylt
