Students Shine in Elwood Summer String Program

Young musicians sharpen their skills in the viola, violin and cello.

Third and fourth graders in the Elwood Union Free School District recently completed a summer string program for beginners.

This three-week summer program, founded by orchestra teacher Karen Gellert, has been developing student’s skills for more than 30 years.

Gellert and guest clinician Chelsea Winters worked with student musicians practicing the viola, violin and cello.

The program was held from late June to July 17. To conclude the program, students performed for their families various musical pieces from the Suzuki Violin School book including “Lightly Row” and “Song of Wind.”

“I feel that it is a great opportunity for the string kids to start or to continue over the summer,” said Gellert.
