1 Dead After Van Collides With NY Thruway Wrecker On I-87: Police

New York State Police said the wrecker was providing traffic control for a disabled vehicle when it was struck from behind.

NYACK, NY — A man died after authorities said his van collided with a New York State Thruway Wrecker as it provided traffic control on northbound Interstate 87 near Nyack.

New York State Police said the collision happened around 7 a.m. Friday near mile marker 17.6, between exit 11 and exit 12. Authorities said a New York State Thruway Wrecker was stopped partially in the left lane as the driver provided traffic control for a disabled vehicle on the left shoulder.

While a tow truck was loading the disabled vehicle, a 2017 Dodge cargo van traveling in the left lane rear-ended the wrecker at a high rate of speed, police said.

According to authorities, the driver of the wrecker was not in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The driver of the van suffered serious injuries and was taken to Nyack Hospital, where he died.

No other injuries were reported, according to police.
