The Nyack School District is telling us that they're planning on spending $26.3 million and it won't cost taxpayers a dime. The district-wide vote is set for October 29th.
I know – you're thinking of the line about swampland in Florida.
Of course it's not possible to float a $26.3 million bond without taxing tax payers.

Now let's break this down.
First, nearly 30% of the proposed spending plan is for artificial turf and fancy stadium with bleachers, press boxes and lighting. 30%!!! Is that really what we need in times of austerity, when we are laying off teachers, and cutting programs? Is this really the best use of borrowed money? Do Nyack parents really want to be debating artificial turf seven years after we already voted on this issue and told the board resoundingly by a 2-1 margin that we oppose it?

No. No. and No.
Now let's look at the reality of what borrowing $26.3 million means:
The district is planning on borrowing $21.5 million at 4.5% annual for 15 years. That would cost taxpayers at least $2 million annually. $2 million a year would be better allocated to spend on education (perhaps hiring back teachers and staff?) or better yet, how about a tax break?
The district is planning on using every penny ($5 million) in capital reserves to cover a portion of this indecent proposal. ARE THEY KIDDING? Has anyone on the board taken Economics 101? What if we have an actual emergency?
Turf fields need to replaced every six to eight years. This means that we'll be paying for the field for seven years after the field becomes obsolete.
The board operates in a vacuum. Taxpayers are being squeezed from every side. The County of Rockland increased taxes 30% in 2013 and is planning an 18% increase in 2014. The Palisades Mall successfully won its tax appeal case against Clarkstown. WE NEED TAX RELIEF, NOT MORE BURDEN.
Spread the word. Come to board meetings. The next “forum” on the turf bond is September 17th at 7:30pm at the Nyack Center. Sprinkle reality dust on the board. Ask for relief.
See you there.....
