Once a year, Columbia University's Palisades Campus is open free to the public. It's fun for the whole family! See a volcano erupt! Play in a bathtub of oobleck slime! And much much more!

Join a microscopic dance party, create art with jewels from the sea, and make a pinwheel to learn about clean energy with author/illustrator Betsy Franco-Feeney. Find her "WHIMSICAL SCIENCE" events at AREA 12  on the OPEN HOUSE program map

In the Morning:
10-11:15am: Through books and a song, microscopic creatures will come to life before your eyes! Live samples will be placed under a microscope and viewed on a monitor. Bring your cell phone to place it on top of a field microscope and take your own videos to keep!

11:15am-12:15pm: Create designs with diatoms, nicknamed "jewels of the sea" because of their great beauty and their essential role in making life on Earth possible!

In the Afternooon:
1:15pm-3:30pm: Create a pinwheel and learn how wind can produce clean energy! Betsy Franco-Feeney shares her book and a song, Hole in the Bottom of the Sea. It is a hopeful tale of how clean energy helped save wildlife after an oil spill.

Betsy Franco-Feeney is recipient of a “Best Books” Award from Science Books & Films and the American Association for the Advancement of Science for her book Amoeba Hop, and Hole in the Bottom of the Sea garnered this Kirkus review: “If the future of the planet is in the hands of our children, then reading them books like this might be a wise idea."
