Charges After Chase Of Pickup Truck Reported Stolen

The Rockland Sheriff's Office was helped by state troopers and Haverstraw police.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — A Garnerville teen faces charges after leading Rockland Sheriff's deputies on a chase around the northern corner of the county, police alleged.

At 10:30 a.m. July 12, Sheriff Louis Falco III said, a Sheriff’s Patrol officer observed a white 2018 Dodge Ram pickup truck that had been reported stolen out of West Nyack on July 10 being operated on Beach Road in West Haverstraw.

The officer attempted to stop the pickup truck, but the driver refused to stop. A pursuit ensued and crossed from West Haverstraw into Stony Point and back into Haverstraw where the vehicle was eventually boxed in and stopped on Suffern Lane near Hammond Road.

The driver, identified as Desmon S. Nanton, 18, initially refused verbal commands, police alleged. He was ultimately taken into custody by the Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of Haverstraw Police and the New York State Police.

A juvenile passenger was also taken into custody, police said.

In addition to numerous Vehicle and Traffic Law violations in West Haverstraw, Stony Point and Haverstraw, Nanton was charged with Grand Larceny – 3 rd (Felony), Unauthorized Use Of A Motor Vehicle- 1 st (Felony), Criminal Possession Of Stolen Property – 3 rd (Felony), Reckless Endangerment – 2 nd (Misdemeanor), Obstructing Governmental Administration – 2 nd (Misdemeanor), Resisting Arrest (Misdemeanor), and Reckless Driving (Misdemeanor).

He was arraigned at West Haverstraw Justice Court on July 12 and was released with a return court date of July 15 in the Town of Haverstraw Justice Court and July 17 in the Town of Clarkstown Justice Court.
