NYACK, NY — In 1999, Karen Goodman and Kirk Simon began filming Jennifer Johnson's class at Upper Nyack Elementary School for an HBO documentary on kindergarten.

The 13-part show first aired in 2001, and it has been a staple ever since, "serving as a realistic and yet comforting introduction to kindergarten for countless tots and their nervous parents," wrote Gary Stern in The Journal News.

Twenty years after it aired, TJN got in touch with Johnson, still teaching in Nyack, and she got 11 members of the class together. Read Stern's lovely article and see Peter Carr's beautiful photos on lohud.com.
