Health Officials Want Nyack Schools In Fitness Training

Free Physical Activity Leader training will be taking place Dec. 9 at BOCES.

From the Rockland County Department of Health

Want to get the knowledge and skills needed to engage your school community in making the school day more active? Then come to the free Physical Activity Leader (PAL) training on Tuesday, December 9th from 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM at Rockland BOCES in West Nyack.

Schools are encouraged to send two to three staff to the training to better enable them to encourage their school community to support more physical activity during the school day. Once trained, they will have access to a vibrant online learning community for technical support, ideas, and resources to help strengthen their leadership roles.

The research is clear: physically fit and active students do better in school. They are also better able to concentrate, cooperate, and maintain a healthy body weight. Experts now urge schools to provide more chances for students to get the recommended minimum of 60 minutes of physical activity a day at school. With training and technical support, educators can learn just how easy and beneficial it can be to include physical activity breaks, active recess, and physical education focused on fitness.

“Making physical activity a part of the school day helps districts put their wellness policies into action, supporting healthy behaviors and readiness to learn,” said Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert, Rockland County Commissioner of Health.
