It Wasn't Fat Tuesday Without Bourbon Street in Nyack

Earlier this week it was New Orleans, locally

Whether in Belgium, Germany, France or New Orleans (where it is a legal holiday), Mardi Gras has the same theme: eat, drink and be merry on a Tuesday.

This was certainly the agenda Tuesday night at Bourbon Street in Nyack. The party began at 3 p.m., with half priced appetizers, $4 gumbo, $12 traditional Cajun entrees and $2 Gator Bite Shots. The crowd was definitely enjoying this beginning-of-the-week getaway in a New Orleans fashion.

The music—by Compton Maddux and The Dirt Simple Band—was the perfect sound for the night: a mix of feverishly funky country with a splatter of rock and roll. This seasoned group of friends and talented musicians played all night as a backdrop to the local fete.

Bourbon Street in Nyack—which was decorated outside and inside Tuesday night—has a history of its own.

Many years ago, three local buddies took a "fantastic trip," as they describe it, to New Orleans. They returned to Nyack determined to bring a piece of this Cajun culture and atmosphere with them. In the spring of 1999, the three amigos dismantled a nineteenth-century barn in upstate New York and used the pieces to build a little bit of French Quarter on Main Street in Nyack. Now, there are hundreds of keepsakes and souvenirs all over the restaurant.

On June 18, 1999, Bourbon Street officially opened its doors. These friends wanted to create a fun, happy atmosphere where people come for good food, good friends and good times—and accomplish it they did.
