Police ID Driver Killed By Tree

A large tree fell on a passing motorist in front of the school as pupils were arriving.

UPDATE, 2:44PM: Clarkstown police have identified the victim of the falling tree on North Broadway in Upper Nyack Thursday morning. Jerome Muhlenberg, 80, a resident of Upper Nyack, was alone in a car when a tree fell on him in front of the elementary school.

The tree was on school property, police said.


NYACK, NY — Clarkstown Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on North Broadway in Upper Nyack.

Police received a call at about 7:33 a.m., advising that a large tree had fallen on a passing motorist in front of the Upper Nyack Elementary School. Officers arrived and located a 2012 Honda Accord which was occupied by one person and which was completely covered by the fallen tree.

The victim, an 80-year-old man from Upper Nyack, was declared dead at the scene by Rockland Paramedics. His identity is being withheld at this time pending notification of family members.

The scheduled school day at Upper Nyack Elementary School was cancelled. Students who had already arrived and students who were en route to school were diverted to Nyack High School.

Orange and Rockland Utilities responded to the scene to attend to down wires and power was cut off to the area.
