National Merit Semi-Finalists Named in Nyack

The national competition named 16,000 students.

The National Merit Scholarship Program today released the names of 16,000 high school students who have been named Semi-Finalists in the annual scholastic competition.

Semi-finalist status is a useful thing to have on the resume. Many colleges offer grants to semi-finalists, for example.

Also, the students have a shot at the next round—aiming for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33
million that will be offered next spring.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifi nalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title, officials said.
