New Bridge Visitor Parking: Workshop For South Nyack Residents

We're talking an estimated 473 visitors per hour during peak times.

SOUTH NYACK, NY — The new bridge is on schedule to be open in 2018. And that includes the walkway for pedestrians and bicyclists. Everyone expects the Shared Use Path to be heavily used.

South Nyack streets are already significantly used by commuters as well as visitors, shoppers, diners and merchants headed to the Village of Nyack. The new pedestrian/bicycle walkway has the real potential to increase the parking demand.

"Next summer, the fully-completed bridge may very well create a new 'quality of life' issue for the residents of our beautiful Village," said South Nyack Mayor Bonnie Christian in a reminder to residents.

Christian said the opening of the bridge's pedestrian/bicycle walkway (aka Shared Use Path/SUP) between Tarrytown and South Nyack will attract many visitors. Over time, it may also increase the demand for parking.

A New York state study estimated the Shared Use Path could draw 473 visitors per hour, during peak hours, she said.

To look at the issues from the village's point of view, the Parking Committee created by the South Nyack Board of Trustees has gathered data about the current parking needs and possible solutions to institute now, prior to the potential increase of visitors in the summer of 2018.

The committee is hosting a workshop Tuesday.
