Op-Ed: Rockland's Town Supervisors Condemn Pride Center Vandalism

"Hateful speech is not just words; it normalizes and promotes violence towards its targets," they said.

(Jenna Fisher/Patch)

The writers are the elected heads of the five towns in Rockland County.

We, the undersigned Town Supervisors, join together to condemn and deplore the hate crime and vandalism directed against the Pride Center in Nyack.

Hatred has no place in our community and in our County. We are saddened, angry and alarmed as we observe the rising tide of hateful rhetoric, threats and violence directed against the LGBTQ+ community throughout the United States, and we are especially outraged to see this hatred manifest itself in our own community.

Hateful speech is not just words; it normalizes and promotes violence towards its targets. There must be no room in our community or anywhere for targeting, marginalizing and dehumanizing people due to their race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation and gender identity, and we stand with the Pride Center and the LGBTQ+ community in denouncing all forms of hatred and bias.
