Rockland County Truck Route Implemented In West Nyack

Heavy trucks will be restricted to certain roadways and, except for local deliveries, be prohibited from driving on neighborhood streets.

WEST NYACK, NY — Rockland County has implemented something new in local transportation — the Rockland County Truck Route. The truck route, in West Nyack, will allow the county to restrict heavy trucks to roadways able to handle that traffic.

It will also enable the county to post warnings on roads that are not part of the truck route and do not allow trucks.

"This has been a decade-long process," County Executive Ed Day said as he stood with neighbors near a No-Truck sign posted on Doscher Avenue. "We are putting up the first sign right here in recognition of the work that you, the people who live here, have done to draw attention to this issue."

The neighbors with Day at the press conference held signs that read "Thank you" and "Big Step in the Right Direction."

The county completed a Truck Route Study in 2007 and has been working since then with the state and the town of Clarkstown. Final approval was just received from the New York Department of Transportation.

"We are happy to implement the DOT-approved truck route in Clarkstown, which should be an improvement for the neighborhood," said Town Supervisor George Hoehmann.

Day also thanked Rockland County Highway Superintendent Charles "Skip" Vezzetti, who he said has been working for years to designate a Truck Route within the county.

Vezzetti and his staff have started installing signs indicating which roads are designated for truck traffic and which roads ban such traffic unless making a local delivery. The route will be fully marked by the spring.
