Rockland: Light Up Red For Jared On Thursday
March 23 marks two years since firefighter Jared Lloyd and resident Oliver Hueston died in a fire at the Evergreen Court Home For Adults.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — On the second anniversary of the fatal fire at the Evergreen Court Home for Adults, the County of Rockland is participating in the Spring Valley Fire Department’s "Light Rockland Red For Jared" initiative.
Fire departments, EMS agencies, police departments, business owners, homeowners, and school administrators began switching on red lights outside their buildings March 19. The initiative runs till Sunday.
"On March 23rd, 2021, the Spring Valley Fire Department, Columbian Fire Engine Company, and the greater firefighting community was rocked by the untimely death of firefighter Jared Lloyd. Jared lost his life battling a massive fire at an assisted living facility and was credited with saving several residents before he was tragically killed in the line of duty when the building collapsed," fire officials said on Facebook. "In the time since his death Jared has been honored and memorialized by Rockland County, The New York State Legislature and the President of the United States for his dedication and bravery.

“By shining a red light, my administration is showing residents Lloyds’ service is not forgotten,” said County Executive Ed Day. “For all who choose to voluntarily serve in emergency services and protect our communities, we hope our participation in “Light Rockland Red For Jared” serves as a reminder that we do not take that sacrifice lightly and thank you for all you do.”
Residents are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb in their house to a red bulb, county officials said. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see, or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends.
“I think that anytime our first responders can feel like they are not alone is a powerful and worthwhile message,” said Chris Kear, Director of the Rockland County Office of Fire and Emergency Services. “My hope is that the County lit up with red lights sounds the alarm that this county supports our heroes.”
