Understanding US Actions in the Ukraine Crisis

The crisis in Ukraine began in February with small demonstrations in the western part of the country. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian government refused to do exactly what they wanted so the protesters were forced to become violent. Ultimately so much disorder and confusion was created the government collapsed, which allowed the demonstrators to appoint themselves the leaders of Ukraine.

Once they seized control the protesters showed they were the good guys by announcing they liked the US and Western Europe and wanted to join the European Union. They also proved they did not like the Russians who made up the majority of the population in the eastern and southern parts of their country by decreeing that Russian could no longer be used as an official language.

Because the eastern and southern areas of Ukraine had been parts of Russia until the Soviet Union broke up, treaties allowed Russia to have military bases and large numbers of troops in those regions.  As a result of these facts and the confusion created by the collapse of the government in Ukraine, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin was able to commit one of the most dastardly and illegal acts which has ever happened. He allowed his military to establish order and bring stability to the southern region of Ukraine known as Crimea.

Putin claimed the new government was not legitimate because they had overthrown a democratically elected government and were not themselves elected, that what was going on was basically mob rule. He also claimed he had acted to protect the people in the southern and eastern areas of the country because of the anti-Russian actions of the new unelected Ukrainian Government. But he’s a liar. We all know he did it because he is bad. Putin himself is a Christian and does not support the anti-Christian values of Western Europe and the US. In fact Russia is now officially a Christian country and actually has an official Christian church called the Russian Orthodox Church. As if this were not outrageous enough Putin has said publicly that he is not in favor of homosexuality, so he is not just bad, he is really bad. Obviously it is clear he needs to be stopped before he starts exporting moral values to Western Europe and the US and undermines our systems of government and business.

In one of the most despicable lies about the situation some have tried to claim that Russia is just doing what the US did in Grenada and Panama. But this is ridiculous. Those situations were entirely different. Grenada and Panama do not actually border the US, and both of those countries had legitimate governments so there was no question of mob rule. Beyond that we acted not out of fear for our own security but simply because we didn’t like their leaders, so the circumstances are not even remotely comparable.

Fortunately, our President and our Congress have been working to the full extent of their intellectual abilities to help stop Putin and resolve the situation.

First, the US is going to give the protesters who took over Ukraine a billion dollars. Some disloyal Americans have suggested that in a time when many cities and communities have been ravaged by a wave of home foreclosures caused by fraudulent banking practices the money should have been given to Americans in danger of losing their houses. But everyone knows this would create a bad precedent. If we started giving money to the people the banks victimized, the banks themselves might want money to make sure they could stay in business despite whatever illegal or stupid actions they have committed. Others have complained that as a result of the billion dollar gift average Americans will have to pay higher taxes and will in effect be supporting mob rule. But what kind of American complains about higher taxes when there is a principle involved.

Second, our government will be sending natural gas to Ukraine and Western Europe. Because our energy companies have been engaging in the practice of Fracking for the past decade, the US has an abundance of natural gas. Unfortunately, this abundance has resulted in the value of that gas being less than it previously had been. By sending gas to the Ukraine and Europe the companies which have devoted so much effort to recovering the gas and have also financially contributed so generously to our politicians and political parties to insure they are able to use the Fracking process, will finally be able to achieve really big profits. Since they are selling the gas overseas they will also be able to keep those profits offshore and avoid American taxes which means they will make even more money, all of which proves the American system works better than any other. Average Americans will end up paying more for natural gas and be stuck with the environmental consequences of Fracking for decades to come, but this is a small price to pay to demonstrate to the world how well the American government and American corporations work together.

Finally, our government has reacted strongly against the prospect of the people of the eastern and southern areas of Ukraine voting to decide whether they want to be part of Russia or Ukraine. Our President himself has called such an exercise illegal.  This may seem odd since we support Islamic terrorists voting in Syria and other Arab countries. But there is an important distinction here. We believe in multi–culturalism. The culture of the Islamic terrorists includes suicide bombing and raping female American reporters in broad daylight on busy city streets, and even if we don’t approve of everything they do, we have to respect their culture and insist that it be represented.  At the same time we are also a nation of law and our Supreme Court has ruled that in any election our corporations have a right to make financial “contributions” to those officials who will carry out their will after getting elected.  Since our corporations will not have the opportunity to put money into any of these referendums to sway their outcomes, President Obama is absolutely right, it would be entirely un-American to accept the results.

A lot of people have criticized our President and Congress for how they have handled this crisis, but I think that our entire government, Republicans and Democrats working together, have done an absolutely excellent job of showing the World exactly what modern day America stands for.
