Aborted Sale of $16,000 Motorcycles Leads to ID Theft, Larceny Charges

Hudson Valley Motorcycles on North Highland Avenue reported the suspicious transaction.

Arthur V. Sherwood Jr., who police say tried to buy motorcycles with phony credit information, faces charges of Identity Theft 1st Degree, a Class D Felony and Attempted Grand Larceny 3rd Degree, a Class E Felony.

Troopers from the Cortlandt barracks were dispatched to Hudson Valley Motorcycles, located on North Highland Avenue in the Village of Ossining in October, 2014, where an employee reported that he had conducted an unusual transaction.

An out-of-town customer attempted to purchase two Suzuki motorcycles valued at over $16,000. The customer supplied the employee with fraudulent information to open a credit account enabling him to fund the transaction. While waiting for the account to be approved, and before the sale was completed, the man left.

The employee became suspicious about the transaction after the man left the building, and contacted the State Police to report the incident.

Troopers initiated an investigation and learned that the identity supplied to Hudson Valley Motorcycles on the credit application was in fact fictitious. They identified Sherwood, 29, as the customer.

The Bronx resident was arrested Feb. 26 and issued an appearance ticket for Identity Theft 2nd Degree.

The, following a consultation with the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, Sherwood’s charges were upgraded to Identity Theft 1st Degree and Attempted Grand Larceny.

Sherwood was arraigned in the Village of Ossining Court on March 10, and was released. He is due to return to the Village of Ossining Court April 20.
