Volunteer Opportunities Of The Week: Summer Reading Buddies Needed

Every week, Patch will spotlight volunteer opportunities in the Hudson Valley courtesy of Volunteer New York!.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Each week, Patch will be highlighting volunteer opportunities in the Lower Hudson Valley, courtesy of Volunteer New York!. This is a chance to help your community and be an opportunity to give back — perhaps in a way you didn't consider before.

Summer Reading Buddies

Become a Summer Reading Buddy and make a positive impact in a child's reading journey over the summer months! Summer Reading Buddies are matched one-on-one or in small groups with children in grades 1-5. Using books and worksheets, each Summer Reading Buddy works with the children to practice their reading skills or complete a related activity. Volunteers must be 16+.
Date: 7/6-8/12; weekdays
Organization: Family Service Society of Yonkers
Location: Ossining, Port Chester, and Yonkers


Freedom School Activity Leaders

The Freedom School allows children to dedicate their summer break to building a love of reading, learning, and leadership. To complete this experience, volunteers are needed to lead 45-minute enrichment sessions that introduce these youth scholars to a variety of subjects, including different talents, hobbies, professions, or passions. Each session is comprised of about 16 youth scholars from a single grade level, though age groups can be combined if it suits the volunteer activity leader's activity or presentation. Volunteers are welcome to present sessions on any topic, including arts and crafts, music and dance, sports and fitness, career exploration, and more.
Date: 7/7-8/20; Tuesdays and Thursdays

Summer Book Sale

Friends of Warner Library is hosting a Summer Pop-Up Book Sale at the TaSH Farmer's Market in Tarrytown! Volunteers can assist with setting up and breaking down tables and books. Volunteers must be able to lift and carry tables and boxes of books. This is a perfect opportunity for student groups or colleagues who want to enjoy a fun team-building activity. Students ages 16+ are welcome and community service credit can be provided.
Date: 7/10-7/11; multiple opportunities - registration closes 7/10 at 12 p.m.

Garden Clean-Up and Planting

Join the Garden Club of New Rochelle for a clean-up in the Shakespeare Garden at Davenport Park in New Rochelle. Volunteers will be weeding, deadheading, and pruning. Please wear gloves, bring your favorite gardening tools, and wear gardening clothes and closed-toe shoes. The Garden Club of New Rochelle will provide some tools.

Pleasantville Music Festival

Pleasantville Music Festival returns for its 20th year with a full day of live music and family-friendly events, and it needs volunteers to help make the day a success! All volunteers receive a T-shirt and roles occur between 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Volunteers can help by directing parking and greeting guests, picking up trash, and supervising activity tables.
Date: 7/11 between 7 a.m.-10 p.m.; multiple opportunities
