Teatown Sets Captivating Revolutionary War Storytelling Program To Celebrate America 250

OSSINING, NY — The celebration of. America's 250th will continue at an appropriate locale.

Teatown in Ossining will host two Sept. 26 programs with storyteller Jonathan Kruk, including a family event in the afternoon and an adults-only evening fundraiser focused on Revolutionary-era Westchester.

The programs will connect visitors to the history of the Teatown landscape and surrounding communities before the site became a land trust and environmental education center. The events are part of America 250 programming and will use storytelling, music and audience participation to explore local ties to the nation's founding.

"Teatown is a place where people come to connect with the landscape, and that landscape has a history of its own," said Kevin Carter, Executive Director of Teatown. "As we celebrate America 250, we're excited to work with Jonathan Kruk to share the stories of Teatown and Revolutionary-era Westchester with our community."

The afternoon program, Teatown Tales, is scheduled for 2 to 3 p.m. It is designed for families, and children will step into storytelling roles as Kruk shares tales inspired by the history and landscape of the Hudson Valley. The program will include local place-name stories, the tale of the Hudson River's formation and musical accompaniment by "Caffeine" Steve Kelman, according to the announcement.

The evening event, Revolutionary Teatown!, is set for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Teatown described it as an adults-only program about Teatown's Revolutionary origins and Westchester's struggle for independence. Kruk will be joined by Historical Balladeer Linda Russell for period songs, sing-along pub tunes, hammer dulcimer and guitar. The ticket price includes refreshments, beer and wine.

The evening program will also serve as a fundraiser for Teatown's ongoing campus transformation. That work includes renovation of the Nature Center and construction of a new Education Center with expanded and more accessible ADA-compliant spaces for environmental learning, wildlife encounters, research and community engagement.

Teatown is a nonprofit, nationally accredited land trust that protects and manages more than 1,300 acres, conducts habitat restoration and scientific research, and provides environmental education. Kruk, described in the announcement as the Hudson Valley's master storyteller, is known for solo shows of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and A Christmas Carol.
