Bannerman Island: The Mysterious Place on the Hudson
Ferry Sloops Lecture Series - "Bannerman Island: The Mysterious Place on the Hudson" presented by Thom Johnson.

Ferry Sloops’ 2016 Spring Lecture Series continues on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at 7:30pm, at Shattemuc Yacht Club in Ossining with “Bannerman Island: The Mysterious Place on the Hudson” presented by Thom Johnson.
Bannerman Castle is located on Pollepel island, 6 3/4 acres of mostly rock in the Hudson river near Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York. It was built by Frank Bannerman VI, not as a home, but as a place to store items such as weapons and ammunition that he purchased at government auctions. Frank Bannerman personally designed the island's buildings, docks, turrets, garden walls and moat in the style of old Scottish castles.
Once an uninhabited place, accessible only by boat, it was considered haunted by some Indian tribes and thus became a refuge for those trying to escape them. These superstitions and others promoted by later Dutch sailors make for many fanciful tales.
