Carlucci Calls On NY Lawmakers To Name A Female Attorney General

As the Schneiderman scandal unfolds, the state senator, who represents Rockland and a bit of Westchester, said a woman's voice is needed.

State Senator David Carlucci (Rockland/Westchester) has called on his colleagues to appoint a woman to the post to be vacated by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman Tuesday.

Schneiderman said he would resign after he was accused of abusing four women in a report published by The New Yorker. He will step down at the end of the business day.

“In light of the disturbing allegations and resignation of Eric Schneiderman, the legislature should appoint a woman to be our states’ next attorney general," Carlucci said. "After over 240 years of men as our leading law enforcement officer, it is clear that a woman’s voice in the Attorney General’s office is desperately needed at this time. Doing so would send a message to all New Yorkers, and to our nation that we are a state that values fairness and respect of all of its residents.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo called for Schneiderman to resign Monday night. "My personal opinion is that, given the damning pattern of facts and corroboration laid out in the article, I do not believe it is possible for Eric Schneiderman to continue to serve as Attorney General, and for the good of the office, he should resign."

Solicitor General Barbara Underwood was appointed as acting attorney general. The New York legislature makes a permanent appointment until the election in November.
