Croton Fourth-Graders Make Colonial Pillows
Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School students prepare for Colonial Day

From the Croton-Harmon schools
Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School fourth-graders are in the midst of sewing pillows as they delve into the Colonial history unit.
“We are creating traditional four-square pillows to jumpstart into the Colonial curriculum,” said fourth-grade teacher Eileen Stark. “We have our full-day Colonial Fair coming up and hopefully these pillows will be on display.”

With the help of teachers and parent volunteers, the Croton-Harmon students were careful to pin their fabric together, cut it and thread needles as they undertook the precise tasks of forming their pillows.
“It’s extra hard because we are using four pieces instead of two,” said student Hanna. “It’s interesting to learn how people did things differently than we do.”
