OSSINING, NY — As the new year begins, our local officials are still busy conducting the public's business in plain sight.
John Adams famously wrote, "Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people, who have a right … and a desire to know."
There are plenty of upcoming chances to help tend to our democracy close to the roots. Several public meetings are scheduled for this week in Croton and Ossining.

Monday
The Cortlandt Town Board will hold a work session at 6 p.m. to discuss the Medical Oriented District, in follow up to the Nov. 29 Special Town Board Meeting, and outline next steps.

The Croton-on-Hudson Village Board of Trustees meets at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Building on Van Wyck Street. The agenda includes a public hearing to consider granting a special permit to Dish Wireless LLC to collocate new transmission equipment on the existing wireless tower at 26 Veterans Plaza.
Tuesday
The Cortland Town Board will hold a business meeting at 7 p.m. Among the agenda items: removal of the Sprout Brook Dam and the Annsville Waterfront Enhancement Distric
The Ossining Village Zoning Board of Appeals will meet at the John Paul Rodrigues Ossining Operations Center, 101 Route 9A. On the agenda:
- 2 Church St. Open Door Family Medical Center is seeking parking variances.
- 36 Yale Ave. Applicant is seeking a use variance for a proposed four-family house in a two-family zoning district and a parking variance.
- 32 Belle Ave. Applicant seeks setback variances and permission for a 2nd story.
- 12 Campwoods Road. Applicant is seeking a variance for extending a non-conforming use beyond the permitted 10 percent.
- 65 Main St. Applicant seeks to repurpose the existing building as a restaurant and apartments.
- 16 Campwoods Road. Applicant is seeking a use variance for the legalization of a construction yard and for 4 residential apartments.
Wednesday
The Ossining Board of Education meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Anne M. Dorner Middle School Cafeteria at 100 Van Cortlandt Ave.
The Ossining Village Board of Trustees meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building, Croton Avenue. Among the agenda items is a cabaret license allowing live music at La Tusa Bar Restaurant, 26 South Highland Ave. The board is expected to deny a cabaret license to El Manabita Sports Restaurant and Bar, 107 Main St. because of multiple referrals to the New York State Liquor Authority by the Ossining Police Department.
The Town of Ossining Planning Board meets at 7:30 p.m. at John-Paul Rodrigues Operations Center.
Thursday
- The Croton-Harmon Board of Education will hold a Budget Work Session Meeting starting at 7:30 p.m. in the CHHS Community Room.
